I just noticed something very strange. in the Toyota drawings it looks like the 28L has suicide doors in the rear. Lara definitely does not and we haven't found any evidence that it ever did. Digging through the pictures of all of the other 4-door 28s that exist it looks like none of them went into production with the suicide doors. Can't lie, I wish it did - that would be pretty cool.

Sorry, wasn't sure what I was going to be looking for when I took the picture. The Asahi one is the bottom one in this photo. The top one looks like one from an old Bronco. I'm sure we can get it working and make a correct lever, but didn't think I'd have to find a second one!

Middle picture in post #236 shows the top of the Asahi wiper. There are a number of things missing besides manual handle. What is missing on top is what opens the vacuum to wiper. Not sure if any of that is what switches the vacuum over to the other side when it's at the end of the stroke. Are you able to move the shaft where the manual handle attaches? If it moves when the wiper reaches the end of the stroke do you hear a click?

It could very well be that very early or prototype fj28l had those doors and went to regular doors in production

I have several pics of 25’s that have odd things about them

Like solid posts for the door bows ... bj jeep type rears on 25’s strange tops ... toyota loved to you around with different stuff just to annoy us later in life :)

I can post pics up sometime later in the day

Got some parts back from sandblast/epoxy today already, lots of swiss cheese on the doors! Good to see what we're going to be working with though.

Also removed the headliner finally, looks like it had a factory dome light at some point - there's a factory bracket in the center.

And @dmamj stopped by for a visit and an early early early christmas gift - FJ28L Parts Manual! Some late night reading happening tonight... I was giddy getting it in hand.

Located an early generator today, fan shroud, fender aprons and a few other parts. All in all a good day

I’ll have to try to mess with this tomorrow, it’s really crusted over I hope it can be saved and restored. I’ll probably PM you once we get into it to pick your brain a bit. I honestly know nothing about these!

Nathan, you weren't kidding about the welding. I've got 2 aprons in perfect condition but they're off my '75 FJ40. They'll fit, but the support bracket on the inside is slightly different. You may have to drill 2 new holes to bolt that bracket. The only thing I can think of that might be a problem is the hood hold downs where in a different location on the 25 than the 40 due to the air intake screen on the 25 apron. The hold down is about 1" closer to the cab on the 25. By looking at your pics I think they'll be good but you'll have to hold them under your hood to see if they line up.. You also have to drill new holes for the emblem. If I remember correctly I filled the emblem holes on these aprons.

I can send them out today with the fenders and if they don't work out you can send them back as we exchange parts.

Wish I had a place by me that blasted ... even worse to find a powder coater

You got a powder coater by you?

We got ziltch here ... nys sucks lol
We have a guy that chromes literally next door to my friends shop where Lara is. There’s a 3D printer next door too, and sandblast and powder coat are just a couple miles away. I hadn’t thought about that but yes Phoenix does make restoring this old girl convenient, but not necessarily cheap! I should be thankful though.

Sure, thank you Gene! The aprons I found I think may require some modification too, so we will just use the best pair and I’ll send the other two back to you.

I love these old pictures, that's not derailing at all its entertainment :)

Anybody know when Toyota switched over from the vacuum to electric wiper motors? As I have a set of the electric TNK's, I might have to consider going that route if I'm unsuccessful finding and restoring the vacuum motors at least for the short term. If I'm lucky enough to find another someday, I can always go back.

My '60 FJ25 had the vacuum motors and they were sent to Jim Casagrande years ago. I think they are the only ones I have ever seen. I'll be stopping by Mark's Off Road and Specter's soon and I'll check to see if they have any.

Here's the aprons. I'm wrapping them up now with the fenders. They should be picked up and headed to you in a few hours.

Spent some time scanning in the 28L parts manual this afternoon. My neck hurts! Did it all from my phone because the bindings are in rough shape and I didn't want to risk hurting it on a flatbed scanner. So apologies for the image quality, but it's all legible. Thanks again @dmamj !

Time to put that manual away someplace safe and use the e-files instead. Here it is for everyone:

Wow, thanks for scanning that Nathan. You did it in three days, and I couldn't get it done in six months.
Too much important info in there for me to procrastinate! It's pretty amazing how much info is in these manuals, no excuse anymore not to get this restoration right I guess? Although unfortunately there's no 28L body/coach information in there, but I didn't figure there would be
Was working on sorting thru parts to get all my 25 parts together. Came across the wipers for #14. Not sure if these are the same arms that are used on the FJ28 but are correct for the FJ25.

Those look the same. Beautiful condition too! If you’re willing to part with them let me know. Otherwise I’m thinking I may have to find some easier to locate motors for an old Scout or something and just hope that someday I find the correct set and swap them in.
.

Now that you have the parts manual you can see what vehicle certain parts originated from and be able to search for two seperate vehicles to find certain parts ... if your looking and only shows the 25 or 28 it’s kinda stuck to the one car (land cruiser) because you can’t see subsequent vehicles it came on after

28L would be your truck originated that part ... and you do not know if that part was used on subsequent different vehicles
But... a lot of times it’s a help
