The replacement looks identical only all that text is blank except for labeling the battery.

I tried last night to program the new remote with no luck following directions I found here:

Later today I’ll swap the chip from my original remote to the new one and see if I can program the remote that way.

So I jumped into this without doing enough reading. I bought the 2/$25 eBay keys for a 2006LX470 and two YotaMD shells to stuff them in. I got the keys cut at Lexus for $60. Tried to program and realized I need the T29 chip (instead of T30, thanks @Mauser for this info). I ordered replacement chips for $10/each and programmed them no problem. Then my remote won’t program. Turns out I got HYQ1512V when what I need is HYQ12BBT.

Anyway, I’m searching now for a HYQ12BBT remote and I’m having trouble finding one. Are all HYQ12BBT remotes the same? I don’t care if it has a chip or not, don’t care if it has a key attached. Has anyone had luck with this?

I see one for 2010-2014 FJ Cruiser w/ G chip. Will this work?

Ryan, if you don't mind posting a pic, that we be appreciated. Also, if i have a fob for the doors and valet key to start the truck. Does the fob need to stay with key, or can I start the truck, get out and lock the doors, and just use the door fob to get back in? Or if does the fob need to stay within a certain distance of the truck at all times?

This just cured my 98 dead key fob blues. Spot on and brought two back to life.

Big thanks to @Mauser for flashing my ECU for me. I sent my entire ECU because I wasn't comfortable soldering a new chip onto the needed circuit board on my ECU. Removing the ECU is like a 1/4 job. All you need is a phillips head screwdriver. Mauser really went above any beyond. Once they received the ECU, they had it headed back to me in the next business day. I really appreciate the help.

Just to wrap this up in case anyone searches for 2006 LX470 key replacement:

I bought two T29 chips from Lockpicks.com ($10 each)
I bought two FJ Cruiser replacement keys from RemotesRemotes.com with a 12BBT remote ($26 each). They came with G chips which I’ll probably throw out, and the wrong key blade.
I stuffed both of these inside the eBay blanks I got ($16 for two). The blanks were supposed to be for 2006 LX but wrong chip (T30) and wrong remote (1512V).

Anyway, it all works! Pain in the butt, cost me about $62 for parts, another $60 to have them laser cut at the dealership. Still lot less than new Lexus keys.

Then I broke apart the shells and packed it all into YotaMD case. Still cheaper than factory keys. In future, if anyone is looking for this blade/chip/remote combo it might be worth getting in touch with RemotesRemotes or someone similar and see if they’ll send one already built. I know they have all the parts.

Yeah I have been thinking about grabbing a TechStream cable and software but only problem is that it will require me to purchase a Windows laptop as well. We are an "Apple Ecosystem" family so iPhone's, AppleTV's, and other Apple products galore. Maybe if the wife ends up ditching her old MacBook this year I will steal it from her and throw parallel's on there to run a windows emulator.

@gregnash, you can run TechStream on a MacBook. I am running it on a new MacBook Air. Check out this thread for example running VirtualBox.

I was not able to get that version of Virtual Box working on either of my Macs, so I ended up downloading a current version of Virtual Box (free) and installing TechStream myself. I purchased the MiniVCI from this vendor:

Yeah I saw that, only thing is that the Macbook that we have is my wife's work computer. So don't want to install stuff on there and potentially mess something up as it is used for our business and would be the death of me if something were to happen to the macbook. Watching different ones on ebay and the Thinkpad T420 are going for less than $100 and have more than enough horsepower for what I will use it for. Most come with Win10 installed so at that point I just need the adapter and software which would end up putting me at a little over $100 for everything. Not a huge investment plus seeing as we have another Toyota (4Runner) I can use this to diagnose should we ever have issues.

Hi guys, does everyone's gong go when the key is inserted (without any turns) like in the video or does the gong go after the key is turned? My 99 does not not make a sound until I turn the key. Here is my question, after eprom chip is replaced I am concerned my key won't get recognized to start the programing after initial boot up. Any help on what makes the gong go? Also, I may have problems programing my FOB key for keyless.

I don't think you will have any trouble adding keys.

Wanted to throw this update out there...
If you remember, a few weeks ago I had 2 new keys cut and then all three programmed to the transponder system via a local locksmith. He was successful in getting 2 of the 3 key chips added to the system but couldn't get the last one to take for whatever reason (he was using a generic large scan tool to add keys, not techstream). So after some searching I was able to find a buddy willing to loan me his laptop for a bit and let install the Toyota Techstream software on it to play with.

When I went into the system and go everything going this week, I found in the immobilizer section that there were a total of 8 keys programmed (all Master designation). I attempted to add my one known unprogrammed key to the system as a VALET designation but did not have any luck. I decided to delete all the keys that were in the system (except the one being used) and then add the existing keys again. Whala all the key were programmed within a short period of time and tested to ensure that when inserted into the ignition they are not only recognized as a MASTER but also start the vehicle.

So as a tip... it looks like, at least for my 98, the maximum number of keys that a system can hold is 8.

Now it's time to man up and admit I cannot do this myself and ask for your help.

I have a 1998 LC with no master keys.

Is it better to buy an OEM Toyota remote key. Or buy a cheapo ebay 3 button remote key? What is your recommendation? Is there any vendors that you recommend?

I'm down to my last working key (valet key). I bent my second valet key while closing my tailgate with the key in it, and the lanyard hooked into my bumper...

Any help would be appreciated!

Hey guys, first post on the forum.
I just bought a US spec 2003 LC, it came with no master keys and no slave keys, I have only 2 aftermarket keys that starts the engine and one Toyota key that does not start the engine. The previous owner fitted an aftermarket fob to unlock/lock the doors.

I want to return to stock and remove the aftermarket fobs.
Where do I start ?
