I fitted a new HU in mine a few months ago, not really used it as I still do not have my licence back. I like it because it is neat and tidy, get a picture next time I am in the garage.

I just use these expensive earbuds they sound way better then any head unit I have heard in years and they just bluetooth right to my phone

I didn’t install it myself, but I believe he was able to take the harness it came with and plug it straight in. It had a Sony DVD head unit when I bought it.

I put one of these in my '92. I was quite pleased, standard single din, and looks somewhat period correct.

I have the same issue with most aftermarket radios - they look pretty stupid. I have a pioneer single din right now that is ok, at the very least I can match to the factory green backlighting. I will replace it with a modern double-din just because visibility is terrible when trying to reverse and I want a backup camera.

I bought that with the matching amp new in 2014 and they sat on the shelf until I put them in the 80 a couple years ago. They are worth the money sound wise.

There is a scion head unit that is plug and play if you search don’t remember it’s features or looks

You know what, this reminds me of the Scion HU that I've been saving in a USPS box for someone to take off my hands!! It was in my 4runner for a year before I too moved to the Sony XAV-100. I think it comes with all sorts of wiring and junk.
