The grinding for reverse would also happen at a standstill - Its something after the torque converter and before the drive shafts....doesn't leave too many options.

At Hurricane Creek of all places too. If this was back in the mid 90's I would believe it because the trail was a lot different then as compared to now. Real sorry to see that this s**t happen, but not at all surprised to see how the group came together and reacted.

Early on we were joking about Jamie's off-color vehicle, but apparently white was the way to go this weekend.

On a more positive note, Ava had a successful surgery. She spent the day Saturday in the dark unable / unwilling to open her eyes. We were beginning to worry. Sunday she was out playing in the yard seemingly unaffected. She could have gone to school today but we let her play hooky. She'll be back in school tomorrow. Thanks to everyone who expressed concern or sent up prayers on her behalf. Sounds like y'all had a crazy weekend too. I hope that the final outcome of the weekend drama is as good for you guys as it appears to have turned out for the Rushing clan.

Ahh, so grinding with driveshafts sitting still.
I'm curious .... you wouldn't be talking about the kind of grinding that could come from a spinning tranny trying to engage the parking pawl would you?

It never even dawned on us that the problem would continue with the front drive shaft removed To complete the full circle of curses (very small curse), we did have a minor casualty when we got home - somehow the hi-lift jack's brand new bolt to hold it to the rear swing out seized up and I unknowingly cranked on it until it tore the square eyelet that holds it firm all apart - made a square into a circle.
I will have to cut off the bolt and then probably weld the swing out to fix the jack mount.

Please don't feel bad guys, you had no idea, nor did we. You already told us that you were going to split off ahead of time we thought nothing of it. Sometimes chit happens and yesterday was just one of those days. Look forward to heading out with you guys again.

The actuators on those are known to stick. If it's the one I'm thinking of you can remove the actuator cover carefully and manually engage or in your case disengage the t-case. Loud bang was probably something in the t-case letting go. When they get stuck you have to fix it fairly quick or you will tear it up.

We have some more pics we will post up soon. I took mostly panoramic and it looks like this site may not allow those or they are too big.
Here are a few things we learned on our trip:
1. We HAVE to get better at using apps for navigation, and need to learn more from Izzy and others on this. I think our current system works, but it is not flexible enough (using grid coordinates and Garmin in dash).
2. Stan and Heather's shish kabobs are our future plan for meats/veggies for camp outs. Loved them and so nice/easy to work with.
3. Jim's cut fruits looked wonderful and we will do more of that. We also loved the shallow clear stackers for smaller gear.
4. We brought too much food
5. We brought too much beer - one a night is probably enough for us.
6. We missed the charcoal table - just as a place to cook stuff and put hot stuff -
7. Our Campmaid Dutch Oven thing is kinda too small for a grill and too expensive just to hold lids. Don't need if if we have a charcoal table.
8. We will go ahead and bring our Camp Chef two-burner if we have room. It is nice having the open table space. However, it requires a bigger propane bottles. Our smaller Coleman will most likely be our typical camping stove, though.
9. We really want a FZJ80 - we want the room and the ride off-road. We wanted one before, but Lincoln's 4Runner was too nice to pass up and the gas mileage was a concern at the time. We are ready to set aside a vehicle now for just expedition.
