Woke up thinking "do I need a V8 or will a warmed up 2f keep the smiles coming?" Since you guys have wheeled AZ for ever what do y'all think? My F is running fine but she doesn't like going up the hill on 35's. The debate has been searched and well beaten on Mud. So let's keep it local. Should I: SBC carbed, tbi or Ls1 with slush box? Or KISS "keep it simple stupid" and pick up a good running 2f and cam it with port the head and add efi to get the most power out of the 2f? I can probably get a decent 2f cheap, the V8 is gonna take alot more pennie$! So what gives? What is the Copper State Concensus? I want to collect parts over the next few months and not set off the:princess: alarm if you know what I mean.

If the budget allows, TBI V8 IMHO.

Ive known people who have done the built 2F route and in the end decided it was almost the same $ to go ahead and do the V8.

Cut the corner and get to where youll end up one day anyway :D

Did you ever read that dudes post where he spend thousands on his 2f making it fuel injected and porting it and rebuilding it from the block up? I think it was the big gay 2f or something. He ended up gaining like 20 horsepower and it cost him way more than if he would have just dropped a 350tbi and slush box in. Don't get me wrong, my 2f seems to be running strong and I do 80 on the freeways, but I get like 10 mpg and like you said, I can't go fast up hills.

Okay case in point. My friend put a 350 tbi with a 4l60e in his fj60. I still have my 2f. We both drove up to payson one day. We filled up at the same gas station before we left. When we got up there he had 3/4 of a tank left, i had 1/4 tank.

Yeah, read big gay build, seemed Expensive and for little gain. Thx for the Payson comparison. SBC it will be.

Who has used Advance Adapters bell housing and/or Mark's adapter? Which do you like better? There is an AA bell housing on Craigs list for $275 which goes for $ 379 at AA.

And to think Phil did not pop his hood for us at the last meet. I knew that scoop was hiding something that breathes!

I'm officially collecting parts for the SBC swap. Thinking about rebuilding a SBC 400 as a torque monster. Might do an LS or LT1. Gotta be modern and EFI for sure.

Howdy! My vote would be a 383 stroker with a TBI on top. With everything setup basically stock, it will a very simple, basic setup that will pull stumps and drive great on the freeway, as long as you have a OD transmission of some kind. An NV 45000 comes to mind. John

Phil, flash us a pic of that beautiful FI V8 in your 40. <gearhead porn>

Put a newly rebuilt 350tbi in your cruiser, slap some 35" on it and take it to the dyno and see how much HP you get.

Big difference in RWHP and at the flywheel hp.

I think it gets the brick up to speed very well.

It really depends on your wants/goals. For me the experience of driving old iron is the whole experience and for me a huge part of a '40 is the F series motor. It very a unique, hugely overbuilt torque motor, they don't make anything like it anymore and delivers a "blast from the past" driving experience. I love driving Claudia's 2F powered '40, IMHO it has plenty of power for the '40 platform.

If I were to make a '40 buggy, would look for something much lighter, more compact. I really like how this one came out https://forum.ih8mud.com/hardcore-corner/241699-trail-buggy-fj40-tear-down-build-up-v2-0-a-5.html
But would probably look at a Taco 3.4 motor, plenty of power for a buggy and very small/light.:hillbilly:

See my sig line...

It's kinda cool to talk about the EFI and it's still a Toyota engine, I love the 4-speed tranny, and overall it works pretty well. An in case of TEOTWAWKI or EMP, I can always convert back to carb / std dizzy / mechanical fuel pump pretty easy.

Do you care about "Toyota Only"? If not, definitely go with the FI 350. You can get a engine from a later model Suburban or Tahoe, make sure you get the wiring harness and the computer, and go for it. You can also get a complete turnkey deal from GM Performance.

Or talk to Profitt's. If you have mucho dinero and time, they have it pretty well dialed in...

Oh and one more thing. I did a 350 V8 in my other cruiser a while back, it was a very healthy balanced / bored .060 / huge carb / headers / lots of shiny underhood stuff and cost a ton of money. It didn't really wheel any better but it was fun on the street.

Bottom line, I like what I have now. It was a long time getting here. The way I went it would have been the same money for the FI 350 / 383.

I concur with Kevin and msahr, something about those old inlines..

Or what about a 4bt Cummins? Check out D'Animal's rig in the hardcore section..

WOW now that's a WTSHTF rig! 2.5 years and 84 pages later whew!

a diesel :hhmm:

you wanna switch on the drive to Cruise Moab ? :hillbilly:

I'd trade seats, that thing looks cozy..:D
