So from underneath and looking up at my crank shaft I noticed a funky area on one of the lobes.
Who’s been upclose w/ a crank shaft? Should it have that funky spot?

That looks weird.

That looks like part of your camshaft. You sure it’s your crank?

That’s the cam. Can you take another photo from a bit of a different angle. It looks like one of the cam bearings is trying to escape.
Dark now. I can try tmrw. Someone suggested I mark it w/ a sharpie and turn the hb and see if it moves.

one of the cam bearings
Just a piece right? Yeah the more I look at it, it looks like something layered on the lobe, not cut into it which is what I thought at first. Crap.

That's what it looks like to me - cam bearing working it's way out. Also there's more of the bearing material you found in the pan stuck in the oiling hole?

That totally sucks. Do you have an oil pressure gage other than the one in the dash? Just wondering where your oil pressure sits.

I did have some bits in my pan but I was hoping it was from the crummy fuel pump arm that got ripped off a while back.
No oil gauge other than what’s in truck... here and there it has seemed to catch my eye, not high exactly but shifting more than what I felt was normal of a 30+ gauge.
What sucks is my gut told me. Truck has sounded better then ever w/ the city racer carb but that oil smell was really tweaking me out.
I saw that photo last night... already been reading through cam bearing threads.

I hate asking, but now what? Bottomend. Please don’t tell me I need to pull the engine out....

Yes. Sadly I think this is accurate. But get another photo.

Mark the bearing with a sharpie. Bump the engine over with the starter. Cross your fingers and hope the bearing isn’t spinning in the block!

Others way more knowledgeable will come along. I've never gotten into a push rod cam. I do believe it slides out the front of the motor.

It's a big job but the motor can stay in I think. Push rods and lifters out, radiator out, timing gears out?

still could be a piece of the fuel pump that got lodged between the bearing and the cam lobe. Check your oil pressure. Don't panic. Anyway to pluck it out? Does it move with the cam? Good Idea to mark the bearing and make sure its not spinning. Burning oil is probably external some oil running down and contacting the exhaust manifold, prob at the back of the head.

Photos and video coming. Its a chunk of metal inside one of the holes of the (don't quote me) #4 cam bearing. Screw driver drops into black area and bumps over silver seen in the photo above. Once the video uploads you can see minute movement from the chunk as the cam is rotated but I feel and hear no grinding.

I will be running this truck as is.

I might try to pry it out with a hook tool or a long skinny flat head screwdriver. Don't get crazy tho and scratch or gouge the metal in the bearing or the cam. just gently pry and see if it comes loose. Maybe move the cam around a few times to see if it gets loose in a certain position.

Thumbs up, drops of oil on my chest and tank top, pj pants, muck boots. I know you guys are all dying for a few skin shots once in awhile.

**** No. It’s in tight. I ain’t tugging that one!

Friend just pointed out he thinks the bearing has walked it’s way out of the block... ??
