Oh boy. Went and did a thing.

Son went with me to just "check out" this sweet 1983 FJ60 that has been sitting for.. a while. Last registered in 2000, been on non-op since. But, as far as I can tell, it's also about the most rust free and no wreck example that I've ever come across.

It was also home to 4 dead mice in the driver's rear quarter. Oh holy hell the smell. Spent the afternoon with a mask, some gloves, and a bucket of cleaning everything. I may need to get an ozone generator to get all the stink out. But the interior is sweet. 139K miles. Original paint and the clear isn't peeling. Original blue plates. No cracks in the dash. PO was the original owner's son, but he never drove it. Son is calling it Woody because we already have Stinky Pete.

First item is to chase the oil leak at the rear output and hopefully the rear pan arch (lol, I know where that ends up). Power steering pump is making a lot of racket and leaks. Fires right up but idles high, will have to chase that and the spaghetti of vacuum lines. It's a starting point.

I really don't have a huge goal with this one yet, other than something to wrench on a little and see where it goes.

Very nice find. Fortunately (speaking from experience) the smell of dead/rotten mice will go away in short order. An ozone generator will help make it even quicker too. Obviously be sure to leave the area as exposed to open airflow and for as long as possible and you'll be good to go.

Thanks. I left the windows open and chucked a couple of dryer sheets in the rig before closing it up. The carpet is in ok shape, but there was one small 3x3" spot that was pretty rank and needs some more cleaning.

EDIT - Rig now smells like Bounce dryer sheets. Win for now - will let those peter out and then throw a sachet of those Downey beads in there. Going for the rolling laundromat vibe here :)

Taking a break for now. Epic amount of turds and dirt and sticks and pinecones (!!) removed from the engine bay, frame rails, fender creases up against the firewall, under the carb, on the manifold, on the head, from the brakes, around the charcoal canister... but it's done now. I don't think I've emptied the Shop Vac so many times in a day. Interior smelling fresh(er) after leaving it wide open and dryer sheeted.

Have stayed mostly N95'd up, but if I walk away from this without getting hantagonasyphillis it's a win.

Other stuff. Removed the air cleaner, which someone slathered with white lithium grease on top and bottom. Air filter had mouse nibbles, turds, and a feather. Choke cable is broken at the knob, and the top butterfly was closed, probably explaining my high idle. I started it up after pushing it open manually (without the air cleaner and with a ton of vacuum leaks), and it idled at around 600 for a few seconds before dying, so I'm guessing that is a good sign. Tracing / replacing vacuum hoses and making a big ol' list of stuff to prioritize. Needs a valve cover gasket. Pulling PCV now.

If nothing else laying hands on the rig first and cleaning, you get a sense of where it sits so you can organize in your head as you go. Pics later.

Great looking 60 in one of my favorite colors! Looking forward to seeing where you take this one. Ugh, Mice are the worst. Had some make a nest in my headliner by accessing the roof via the rear vents. Only reason I know is I caught one in the act! Was able to remove 99% of the nest and gross stuff and nuked the area accordingly. Miraculously there is no damage to the headliner. I still get faint whiffs from time to time. Maybe an ozone thingy is in my future

PCV is out along with the typical rock hard gasket. Still jiggled so that's not bad. Vacuum hoses seem all there and accounted for, but I need to go through the charcoal canister side and see which connects to what. Learning about the HAC valve (that's a new one for me) and the big hose at the bottom, which was connected to nothing but buried in about 2" of sh!t on the frame rail. It may just vent to atmosphere but need to research.

Photo dump and working on the parts order list. I hate that fog light wiring so bad. It's done correctly at least and the lights work but the mice got into some of the wires there along the firewall. Also note the JBWeld hack-a$$ fix on the rad tank. That's a first.

Mouse condo was down in that area behind the rear quarter. Nasty. Oh - the porthole cover for the rear washer bag is still here, so that's a nice perk. Have to replace that washer line though, I have some on the shelf somewhere.

Choke cable knob. I tried to re-crimp but it didn't work. Still available new, afaik.

Undecided on the Land Cruiser windshield banner, but it is period correct 🤢 (damn I hate that phrase). Same with the wheels. But that tint is flaking off, will have to take that down eventually.

That's it for now. Good fun weekend.

Tube on bottom of HAC is vented to atmosphere. The bottom of the HAC is removable to clean the crappy little cotton filter. I forgot what I used, but I replaced it with something better, or just clean it. HAC bleeds air into top of carb above 4K feet, so this is Toyota's attempt to filter that air.

Thanks Alf for confirming. I may come back around with other smog-related questions as I go through this yet again.... glutton for punishment...

If the vehicle is parked in a covered area, leave the windows all down 1" for a while to combat the odor.

I left it in the garage overnight with the windows rolled down. Getting some fresh air flow would be better, but it's ok where it sits for now.

You really did score with that rig.

While you've got it apart, check your HIC function per Emissions FSM - people don't realize how important it is for proper idle, particularly in hot areas with crappy RFG that boils in carburetors while using A/C. It also controls your thermostatic flap in the snout of the Air Cleaner. Spoiler: I've never come across an HIC valve that is working, but you may be first :) Can be substituted with valve from another vehicle brand. I used an Isuzu HIC.

On the HIC - I can just replace as PM. Mine looked toasty / turdy. Do you know which one you used?

One thing I did think of, if you could upload a photo of the correct routing of the vacuum lines on the passenger side, both right under the air filter and at the charcoal canister? Having a hard time finding that and the PO had a T capped off, so don't really think that was correct. Anything you can share would be awesome.

I may also see if you have any of those sweet check valves left :) This one has two (I think)!

I used this one

But any will work.

Second below is a pic of a 'Remanufactured' Air Cleaner from BTB. Plenty of that type of HIC on ebay.

There's very clear routing diagram for that piping in the Emissions FSM, downloadable in the 'Resources' section above tabs. As well as this
