I've always wondered if the hood insulation makes any actual difference in reducing cabin noise. And if so how much?

The insulator keeps engine heat from baking the paint on the hood. That alone makes having it valuable to me.

Inadvertently tested what has been stated by @cruiserdan. Removed my insulation and shortly thereafter the paint on the hood began to bake and flake. Why would I do such a thing? It was separating, failing around the plastic retainer pins, and and oil soaked. Shoulda left it on.

Ps. You can get larger plastic buttons to help keep it up at your FLAPS. On the rack with the rest of 'em for a GM.

Yup. Same for me. Took the pad off to work on the windshield washer nozzles... our dogs ran through the garage chasing one another and that was the end of the pad... Clear coat started peeling within a month. Still considering other options for the hood insulation.

Mine has been removed for a couple years. I had squirrels build a nest in it and I ripped it out as a result. Hood paint still OK but at some point I’ll break down and order a new one. I’m sure it cuts down one some noise however between MT tires and a loud exhaust I would not know.

That explains why this of won't be on the truck long.
Anodised and laser etched witsend canister coming up in 5, 4, 3, 2, . . .

1 hundred page thread!

I’d be first in line to buy. Pls include oem hoses for additional profits (for u).

Oh yeah, I forgot about the acorns and mouse s##t that was stored up there.

Plus shipping that huge flat thing would be a killer. Unless it gets folded up like someone's did. Hah

I added foil covered 1" sound foam from Grainger or McMaster Carr to my FJ40, did not make a huge difference in sound really, it helped but not alot. The 1FZE just runs so much smoother and quieter than a 1F, that is half the battle. I also think the two large louvers on a 40 hood let the sound shoot right out at the windshield. I added firewall floor and tunnel stuff too, it all helped sound in the 40. The biggest blocker to noise is a sealed surface, so again, the hood louvers let the sound right out of a 40 along with the large open wheel wells. Newer rigs are all carefully sealed to make the sound go down. Louvers in an 80 hood would let alot of sound out. When I had headers on my 40 the drivers side of the hood and fender would get so hot it cold burn you.

Also interesting to note, my T100 with the 5VZFE is also a quiet running truck, perhaps more quiet than the 80 at idle. It has no underhood cover, and was never offered with one as far as I can tell. That truck is far noisier on the highway however. From what I have been able to tell from peeling back a handful of panels and carpet on both is the overall distribution of the asphalt sheeting is less on the T100, although the same on the floor and the carpet jute is thinner. My pickup was repainted prior to my purchase 11 years ago, hood paint is still very good, but I guess the original paint on the hood and roof had lost most of its clearcoat, so I don't know if that was heat or just typical 90's Toyota clearcoat failure. Don't know if the hood liner would help it drastically or not.

I discovered the intake hose was cracked on our 80 last night. I laid out the two options for my wife, the $130 dollar replacement hose, or $6000 turbo, which also replaces the hose. Since it is her daily driver, I tried to convince her she needed the extra 100HP to get the kids to the bus in the morning just because, but she was not sold on the idea. Guess factory hose it is.

In not too concerned about heat. But just curious what actual noise reduction actually was. Most the cruisers I've owned haven't had hood insulation.
I found noise reduction is substantial on diesels ~15 db. Enough that I bought a new one from Partsouq for a reasonable price which arrived in one piece. They sure know how to pack parts - 1/4" ply and watertight.
Not sure how true the fire blanket theory is - but maybe something to consider with gas

Well ok maybe one more change. I’m swapping out the OEM transmission cooler for a #Derale 13403 cooler. I tried getting a new OEM one but they are NLA. Ugh. The old one is technically fine but...I’m already down this path.

I was originally going to weld in some 6AN fittings to the OEM to keep everything consistent but that didn’t work out. So instead I’m using this unit which comes with 6AN fittings so it worked out great. Hell, they even use the same Continental hose that I use so 👍🏻

So now I gotta decide if I cheap out and use the lazy thru-fun tie connects or I make some brackets? 🤔
