I purchased the Front door seal kit from ccot and installed the window channels. I was very displeased with the product, and it looks awful and binds up my windows and I think it's stripping my window regulators. Anybody have luck with a different brand?
 
I haven't installed it yet, but the stuff I got down at my local glass shop looks like it will work well. Precision brand, p/n #75 0452. The stuff I got was pre-bagged, but it looks like it may come on a roll as well. It's a more modern profile, but it fits the channel well and I don't think it will be too tight on the glass. All I've done at this point is test fit it, though.
 
I had a similar issue with the ccot stuff I ordered. I got in there with a screwdriver, and spread the channel apart a bit. Now it moves alright...
 
If you haven't tried it already, spray some silicon in the channels and roll them up and down a few times. It did the trick when I re-did my door weatherstripping last summer. Although I have a '74 with the earlier style doors, I went with the Spector products and didn't have a problem with them (and they were actually less $$ than CCOT).

My experience is silicon will collect dust and dirt. I have had luck using graphite powder in the channel. But, the biggest trick (other than ordering good stuff up front), is to spread the channel a bit by twisting a screwdriver. Just be careful with the paint, you can go too far.

Went with the Toyota stuff myself. Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters has it all in stock. My old channel was like cement but the new ones are so nice!
 
I tried the SOR reproductions, and they were very tight. The SOR guy told me that most people are happy with them, but some people end up with my experience. He refunded my money and applied to toward the expensive OEM Toyota 'late style' (chrome-less) window glass channels. I have yet to install them, but presume they will work as they should.
 
I have a 74 and bought mine from ccot. They would bind up when I rolled up the windows. I used a small deep socket slightly larger than the opening of the new trim and tapped it through the channel from the top down. I would go up on the size until the window rolled up and down like I wanted. I started using a screwdriver and it caused sharp edges but the socket worked fine.

Are there more than one type of regulator? On the old ones a lot of the times when it seems like a regulator has been stripped out all that has really happened is the tab holding the half gear to the crank gear has bent, allowing the gears to slip beside each other. Bend that tab back and bingo, you're in business again. :)
 
I just replaced my 78's channels with those from CCOT. I found that it's all in how you squeeze them for insertion, then spread them open again. Also, the hinge side goes deeper into the door than the latch side. I cut off 2" of channel on my passenger door hinge-side install and it went well. My driver door I left full length and now I can't spread it fully open all the way down in the door - major binding (have to pull up the glass with one hand while rolling it up with the other). I'm sure it'll get destroyed if I try to remove it and start over - maybe OEM wouldn't have that problem... Perhaps if I remove my inside door panel I can access the hidden end. I wouldn't squeeze the bottom 6" on the hinge side before insertion if I did it again as I think it would have slid easily down the door.

I agree that a screwdriver is likely to rip the material. I used the smooth round end of a wrench, going up in sizes, to spread the channel open by running it through the slot where it's easily reached. For the ends inside the doors, I used wood dowels that I rounded the ends of - again in increasing sizes.

OEM or aftermarket, the elimination of window rattle when open or closed has been a huge plus.

I'd love to know if there is a RUBBER window belt strip as opposed to the FELT that is used by all that I look at. The felt in mine (new, from CCOT) barely touches the glass on the outside. The ends of the metal "felt holders" also don't mate very well to the door metal so I can see a recipe for rusted door bottoms right there between the two issues. Anybody have any thoughts on that? All other vehicles I see use rubber.

Just what I was looking for without having to search!! I was researching window felts and weatherstripping not even 30 minutes ago. Thanks for all of the info and everyone's experience. I just about bought the COOT kit, but I'm not so sure now. Guess I'll be searching even more...
 
I bought from toyota and they are awesome....
 
OEM only for w/s in my opinion. We can buy much of the same aftermarket stuff many others are offering and while the experiences are obviously hit and miss, its not worth fielding the phone calls of those 'misses' when I too have seen the quality differences compared to that of OEM. As Micah pointed out we do stock all of the available OEM weatherstripping, its OEM so the prices won't be nearly as savory as the aftermarket stuff but the quality and time for install more than makes up for it in this case. Go OEM. I bought the kit from CCOT as well and couldn't even get that rubbery thing into the door frame. There is some bad aftermarket stuff out there (as I have learned), but this took it to a whole new level. I then bought OEM and it fits like a charm. Agree with Kurt, when it comes to any w/s, channels, and any other door stuff, go OEM. I wasted my money with that door seal kit, but learned my lesson.

(By the way, not trying to target CCOT...I have been pleased with stuff I got there, but not this).

I used OEM window channels and they work perfectly. Just wished I'd used OEM weatherstripping on my doors. I'm still on the fence about ripping it all out and redoing it w/ OEM. I'm concerned about the difficulty removing the aftmkt rubber and 3M adhesive (don't want to screw up the new paint job).:o Chime in if you have suggestions......not trying to highjack this thread.
 
OEM OEM OEM install was great once the old stuff was out. glf4fun you need to see all Kurt has to offer
It will blow your mind.
