What is the purpose of the window felts? Have a '77. Felts are worn but I'm wondering, even with new ones, are they supposed to keep water out of the door interior or just stop the window from shaking against the frame, when it's down? Have the door apart to do some work and wondering if worth replacing.

they keep debris out and mainly keep it from rattling/scratching

Their general purpose is to deflect water and debris but they don't block 100% of the water. Bonus is they keep the window from rattling. If some crap gets down there and blocks the drain holes, Mr Rust moves himself in.
