why would my ammeter spark?

i've been recently starting and driving my 40 around the block since i got my p/s done.
but it sparks thru the lens sometimes when i start it.

Sounds like a loose wire internally...

That's the fire indicator. It lets you know you have an issue right before your cruiser catches on fire.

Pull the gauge and see what's up.

Or at least bypass that sucker in the meantime. If it sparks, you should be able to see marks from the arcing at the wires, or in the gauge.
