any problems with mounting the head unit vertically? i plan on getting a tuffy console. i have indoor outdoor speakers on order and have a few decks available for cheap but i don;t know how they'd work being vertical. input?

They should work fine. I mounted mine in the dash. The key is to get a good deck. I spent the extra bucks and got a Pioneer 4600 deck that plays MP3's. I love it, I can make a 10 hour CD and not worry about changing disks while I am driving. Also, it hasn't skipped once even on rough roads. I turn it off and use a CB when I am wheeling, But I have gone over big bumps failry fast (daughter loves it) without it skipping a beat. Doubt a cheaper unit would do that.

Pablo,
You running the narrow Tuffy, or the wider one?

Thanks.
Todd Bull.

heres how mine is and I have never had a problem, doesn't skip ever. Rain doesn't seem to hurt it.

I have 2 Cruisers with the CD mounted near vertical, no problems, both Alpine units

Where's a good place to pick up the Tuffy console?

I have my CD player mounted in my Tuffy... been great... and both my CD players were used POS's (I knew they would die of dirt/water before anything else).

:D

I got mine from CCOT (coolcruisers.com). THe girl with the huge cans sold it! Just kidding.

But CCOT has a mount bracket for 40's that worked out well.

What are y'all doing for speakers on these installs?

i put mine in a overhead tuffy. no worries even in deep water crossings. got the doubble unit for the cb also. for speakers i made custom enclosures that attach to the rollcage

I've got a Blau Alaska in a diagonal position in my Tuffy. I keep it locked and use the remote mounted on the steering wheel.

2 6x9s in boxes mounted to left and right of the rear bench seat.

10" Infinity sub mounted in custom box under the driver's seat (needed to raise it up an inch with washers).

4x200 USAcoustics amp in the locker under rear bench.

Sounds great

Speakers in the rear are Bose 151's, mounted to roll bar with ARB mounts, LOVE em. in the doors are 4" MB Quartz

I don't have one of these but my friend does and he loves it. HDD based and portable from car to PC or home stereo. Holds 3,000 CDs worth of music.

My rear is a old Kenwood box I've had for years which the seats hold in place nicely. The front are Memphis Audio and I think they are 6.5. I had to add a spacer to keep the window from hitting the maganet when it is rolled down-you can't even tell is isn't part of the speaker cover. There is about an inch between the cover and window crank.

Bought a cheap radio with good RMS power and sealed it in the bottom of the center console. I use my IPOD with an IGO FM modulator to control volume and MP3 selection. No skips, no worries, and my music goes with me.

my other 82 fj40 came with big door speakers like yours, I HATE them, PITA to roll up the windows(gotta hold crank with ends of fingers) and when exiting I keep hiting my knee on the grills and the grill on mine act like a cheese grater and take a chunk out of my knee.......I HATE THEM!

i'm running a cheapy sony am/fm/cassette stereo in the stereo slot of the tuffy and a cheapy sony 10 disc changer in the box....love the changer. by the time the last disc plays, you forgot what the first disc was.

Landpimp, my crank hits the padding on my rollbar anyway so the cover isn't as big a pain as that. I open my door to roll the window up and down. The one thing that I will say about the window crank is that it is the cheapest made thing on the Cruiser. As beefy as everything is made I can't understand why the handle is so cheap.

Im just a little guy so my knees never reach the cheese grater grills.

I've got a Tuffy console (10") in the Pig. Holds a Pioneer DEH-P5500MP at nearly vertical, has a Pioneer 12 disc changer in the box at vertical. I can make it skip if I take a washboard road at uncomfortable speeds, or drop off a rock and make the frame go bang, or slam the lid while it's playing. This is wired to two MTX amps, 4 Pioneer speakers and a Rockford-Fosgate subwoofer. Volume goes up to 11.
In the 40, I've got a POS in an overhead Tuffy console. Tuffy makes secure speaker boxes too, fits any ol' 6x9. I've got a pair of those bolted in the rear corners.
Got 'em at central 4wheel.
