Guys,

If you are looking for PM service like a tune up/ AT service/ coolant service/ transfer and diff service- does it pay to go to a toyota dealer or can most foreign repair shops handle this????

Uhm like NO!!!!!!

Unless you live in ABQ NM.:D

I have been thrilled with my Toyota dealership and one of the guys there works on my vehicles after hours on smaller stuff. They are honest and fair. I feel very fortunate.

I think a lot depends on your dealership.

If you lived in Denver I would tell you some dealerships are OK, but I would send you to an indepenedent shop that does Toyota/Lexus and is staffed with Toyota certified Mechanics. Lower hourly rate and they care more.

Transfer and diff service is remarkably easy and you could do the Tcase and both diffs yourself for a fraction of what they would charge you.

I think you will find an 80 an expensive vehicle to own if you do not do your own work, they are quite reliable but they do require more maintenance than a typical car, now is a good time to start doing work yourself.

not only are shops expensive the quality of work varies widely.

thanks for the feedback! I am assumig my dealer is more expensive for service but I'll find out for sure.

Diff/T Case service is easier than changing oil. Place drain pan under drain plug. Remove bolt on bottom and allow to drain. put bolt back (Important step). Remove fill bolt about halfway up. Add gear oil until it starts dribbling out of the hole. Replace bolt. Wipe dribble off with paper towel

Have Beer

Move to next Diff or T case

About 5-10 Minute job per diff and t Case. Just don't overtighten the bolts.

That woul cost you about$15-$30 per diff (Depending on what Gear Oil you want to use). or about $90 at the shop with basic Gear oil. So for 30-40 minutes effort you would save $225. If your shop only charges 60, then its $135. $135 for 40 minutes!

The only thing I would change above is to crack the fill plug open before you drain. That way, you are certain you will be able to re-fill.

If you drain first and then find out your fill plug is rounded off/welded on, you won't be very happy. It is a bad feeling to have an empty diff and a stuck fill plug. Ask me how I know... :) Not the end of the world, but who needs the stress?

A lot of this can be done your self, and don't use the Austin Dealers, I can reccomend a few people - depending on your needs. pm me. ;)

Ditto. Local stealerships are really bad, there are a couple of shops that are worth using if you can't do it your self. Come out to the LSLC meeting the last Thurs of the month at Rudy's up north and we'll get you sorted out ...

Citadel, that's the best offer you will ever get. Those guys will help you figure out what and where regarding your truck. And there are several LSLC members who specialize in working on Cruisers too....and they'll treat you right if you use their shop. There's even a few members who will get greasy with you for a 12 pack of Shiner beer.

I'll be there next meeting! I appreciate the help guys.....
