Awesome idea! I'll see about trying to duplicate something as I rebuild those sections of the rear deck.
I got the idea from a guy in the TLCA Facebook page who rebuilt his entire 40 tub like that.
 
Alright, a week into the project and I'm making some headway. A few times I thought maybe I can get by without a body off restoration, but seeing some of the areas that need attention I knew that wasn't going to be the case. What I've found is that 90% of the rust stems from a crappy body repair years ago. The truck was hit in the rear drivers side corner and the body shop stitched in a new panel. However they cut corners in several places and this led to the vast majority of the rust on the truck today. Bondo is OK if you prep the metal under it. They didn't. Bondo shouldn't be 1/4" thick, it was. They stitched in just below the rain gutter seam and then just Bondo'd the seam and added some cheap seam sealer. This just held the moisture against the bare metal and the rust ran along the seam. Once the roof was compromised the moisture got inside and attacked the metal from both sides. So it's bad, but I think it's very repairable. Just need to approach it methodically. Anyway, here's some pics of the current state. My biggest concern is the rust on the rear of the frame. I'm thinking I will just cut out the rivets holding that rear section in and weld in new steel. But I'm going to need to get hold of a bigger welder to do this part.

It's got a nice jack...seriously, salvage what you can. If the running gear is good, put it in a west coast body. Unless your time is totally free

Sorry, I assumed it came with the truck. One less bright spot i guess;). Being 60 y/o I'm looking at my time differently than when I was
30 or 40.. That project would probably, literally, take half my remaining life's spare time

The c hannel is a famous repair, not really worth it if you see how much strength remains beneath all the rust.
Build to tow 5000 kilo in Japan it is overrated, the sway bar linkage is available at the dealer, I replaced mine because they were very crunchy.
It took 30 years to rust but no to repair.

This is exactly what I was thinking, good to see it's already a known thing. Otherwise the frame is solid. There is a mount point on the front axle that is looking like it needs some attention, but that's about it. Thanks for sharing this!

According to the original brochure from my Toyota dealer in AZ, in 1983, the FJ60 towing capacity was 3500 lbs. I bought a 78 fj40 new
and nearly pulled out the wallet for an 83 FJ60. The towing capacity was based on using the under frame bolt on tow hitch that was available
from the dealer and is present on many. The cross member behind the bumper was not rated at all for towing. Towing capacities are determined not just by the frame and axle shaft strengths but also the ability of the suspension and brakes to handle the load.

I know USA law did everything to stop the Japanese importing vehicles, democratic decisions like I know them, don't get me started on EU laws ;)
Public will never benefit from politics, simple.
Dutch law : Towing brake trailer/Aanhangwagen geremd: 3500 kg
If I want I can upgrade to truck status and get the original 5000 airbrake version, some are seen in ads over here.
So don't mind some rusty chassis, a true landcruiser dedicated fixer will not send them all to the junkyard, keep em rolling.
Grind until there is some resistance and patch it with 4mm steel, and high current to get the metal melting.

I know the 60 will actually safely tow over 3500 lbs .. just not very fast. However I would not want to tow 5000 kilos over a Colorado pass or even on flat ground here in the western US where freeway speeds are 75MPH or better. I have trouble keeping the 18 wheelers off my but without a trailer.
They can be impatient and intimidating
 
So a brief update; progress has slowed, as expected. I've started rebuilding the rear valance that is/was nearly destroyed by rust by a shlt repair job years ago. The outside looked good, but all the inner bits were left essentially unrepaired. Also the drivers side access panel to the rear-most frame bolt was left off. This, as well as some holes left from the accident, allowed water and debris to collect inside the rear valance. Add to this all the Bondo the shop used to hide the damage and you are left with the perfect recipe for apocalyptic rust. Fast forward a decade or so and this is what's left of the rear valance:

So I started cutting the bad metal away. I wasn't sure I've ever find good metal, but I eventually did, then I started to build on to that. It's slow going when the rust is this deep, but it'll come together. Eventually. Here's the state of is when I left the shop last night.

As you can see, a long ways to go. But I've got lots of new metal dying to be cut and welded.
