just installed Mickey Thompson Classic III 2368413 16x8 3.625 in BS 6x5.5 bolt pattern and Yokohama 265/75R16 on an 89 62 with stock suspension. Only two issues: center hub on front was a tight fit in wheel and I couldn't find any long lug nuts so I used short ones and had to tighten with a socket which just fit in wheel lug nut hole.

Before and after pics on an 84 with an OME lift.
Before is 16" Alcoa aluminum wheels with 235/85/16 BFG All Terrain TAs.
After is Vision Soft 8 6x5.5 17x8 4.0BS 85H 7883NS from Summit Racing with 285/70/17 BFG AT KO2s from Costco
1/4 spacers on the front and a little grinding on the stock calipers to clear the back of the dimples on the wheels.

Probably a dumb question, but did you try the vision wheels before you ground the caliper and used a spacer? Somebody earlier in the thread used those same wheels without mods and they worked fine.

Love the look of the Soft 8s. Any chance you think you could get by without the spacer?

Pictures?

Yes, of course. Always the path of least resistance first.

No, you would have to grind too much off of the caliper. It is just 1/4", and there is plenty of thread engagement on the lug nuts.

And FYI, "before" tire and wheel weighed 62#, and "after" is 90#- steel vs aluminum, and more rubber.

What spacers did you use? From where?

1/4" aluminum 6x5.5 spacing from the interweb- they are very common and easy to find a lot of places including some autoparts stores.
I had these on the truck already for tie rod clearance on the aluminum wheels, where I had to use extended thread lug nuts because of the wheel thickness. Not so with steel wheels, stock lug nuts are fine.

Update: because I am nervous and like a reasonable safety factor, and because I had them, I painted the ET lug nuts black and put them on. Seemed like the right thing to do.

Right now my truck has 33x12.5x15 BFGs on some Pacer rims that were on it when I bought it. I don't know what the backspacing is on them, but my front tires stick out over 2 inches outside the fender and rears are about 1 inch outside the fender.

I'd like to eventually move to 285/75/16 on a 16x8 wheel. Does anyone have any recommendations or experience with a wheel that has the appropriate backspacing or offset to maintain that tire-outside-the-fender look, but not quite as exaggerated as I have now? I'd like the rears to be about even with the fender, so i need to bring them in about 1 inch.

Sorry for the side track but what color is on your cruiser? Is it original?

I don't believe that's a factory colour. It was a originally brown. repainted 3 owners ago.

Thanks for the reply. Looks good on your truck

No spacers, and it's the tire that sticks out over 2", not the wheel. I did some searching earlier today and looks like it's either the Level 8 Trackers or Eagle Alloys that could work. Thanks.

If you look at mine, the contact tread is right in line with the upper fender when wheels are straight, as is the rim. the sidewall sticks out beyond acting as a rubber bumper. Obviously, a different brand of tire will sit different, but not much.

I used 9" for 315's when I regear. Its the max for a 285, and I was surprised how well it worked for that tire.

Thanks, that is about where I would like mine to sit and I think that should mean basically most wheels w/ around a 3.5" BS are going to sit a bit outside the fender w/ a 285/75/16. I like your wheels, looks cool with the smaller holes.

An 8 inch rim will pinch the tire slightly narrower. The same 3.5" bs means the 1" comes 100" from the outer edge.

I don't know how much will be left beyond the edge. I think you may end up adding a spacer if you are looking to keep the tire outside the fender. Tough call.

Well the attempt to go from stock to 285/75R16 has stalled out at the "fit testing the rims" stage.

The Vision 84 D Windows (16x8 w/ 4.0 BS) DO NOT work on the front as the caliper rubs the slightest amount. Unfortunately, I can't return them without eating a freight charge of about $100. I'm debating whether or not to try 0.25" spacers which in my mind are more like shims right??
