Agree with the tall skinny tire look. On a 16 rim the 255/85/16 are the closest to a 33x10.5x15 but are no where to be found hence going to a 235/85/16. These are almost 32" and 9.5" wide. Good luck in your search!!

I am trying to go up to 17's in alloy, 17*8.5 in a traditional look like the MT's IIIs/ AR Baja's. All the 17's in alloy appear to be 4-4.5 backspacing, and I'm stuck on the idea that 3.625- 3.75 is the goal here. Does anyone here run the level 8 trackers in 17x8.5 ... looks like 4 inch backspacing? With no spacers?

I see this wheel mentioned on page 13 of the thread (in 15's/16's and 17's), but these owners have other modifications (or spacers) that may be a factor?

my 62 has OME light, and otherwise it's all stock.

ok, i'll play-current setup is stock rims, 33"x10.50x15" BFG AT that are pretty tired. Waiting for the Summit/Wheel Vintiques 16x8 smoothies to show up...only problem is I'd like to keep the "tall and skinny" thing going AND try the Cooper AT3s, but the 285/75/16 looks like it's gonna be 32.5" x11.6"...the 295/75/16 are a little taller, but 11.9" wide...ughh.
I'm allergic to wide wheels and tires...I break out in buyer's remorse.

Cooper AT3. 285/75/16. Pretty quiet so far, most of my driving is on the road lately. I'm gonna order the little moon hubcaps and see how it looks.

I already miss the tall/skinny look...considering widening the stock wagon wheels I have and going back to 33x10.5s. I'll probably just widen the wheels and save them for a muddy day.

Sigh.

3.625" backspace

(Thats an 86 FJ60 on OME suspension and 285/75/16s, that came from American Toyota in NM, still wearing its original paint and the American Toyota dealer sticker on the tailgate!)

Nice! My '82 FJ60 was purchased used from American Toyota - same color as yours (and the same color as my '84 FJ60). My new project is an '86, but in blue. Toyota 70-Series 16" wheels with 235/85R16s and OME suspension. Pictures forthcoming.

Nice, I wish it were mine, its my brother-in-laws, but we won't be letting it out of the family!

and I'm stuck on the idea that 3.625- 3.75 is the goal here.

3.625 is the magical BS dimension for 15" wheels, due to the fact that the edge of the wheel is right next to the tie rod end. If you move up to 16" wheels, the lip of the wheel extends out past the TRE and 4" BS can be used no problem.

Skip back in this thread several pages. It is explained there by example.

Thanks Output Shaft. I appreciate the distinction between 15's and 16's, and read the thread over and over before stopping to ask for directions... I kept getting conflicting advice, but I am now waiting on the backordered 17 inch Level 8 Trackers. if i remember correctly they have around 4 inch backspacing. in a few weeks i will post a new pic.

Just replaced my OEM chrome steelies with these 16x8.5 alloys from Americas Tire.

They are the same one that @theron started with and look great!
Bean! My FJ60 build and adventure

I also went with 285x75 R16 in BFG KO2s.

My FJ62 runs on the stock suspension and didn't anticipate any rubbing issues with these and there are none.

But I had a problem with the front rims rubbing on the tie rod. America's tire installed everything but as they were rolling it out of the bay they noticed the screeching sound and stopped. We took off the wheels and noticed where it was rubbing. No other wheel they have looks good (too blingy) so I decided I was going to grind a bit on the tie rod. After a bit of grinding the wheels fit. I hated doing that but it didn't need much.

Just wanted to make note that these wheels didn't go on without a bit of modification. They cleared the caliper fine.

Are these the exact ones that theron used? backspacing wise? I was looking at getting these but dont want to grind on anything. Just wondering why you would have an issue but not someone else? I will be honest the whole wheel/backspacing/tire thing makes my head hurt trying to figure it out!

As far as I can tell that link is the same one that Theron used and the same backspacing. He runs a 60 but that shouldn't matter. There could be some type of alignment issue that had my tie rods pushed out further than his? My alignment is good right now so I'm not sure what else it could have been or how else I could have made them fit.

@erse i expect to be testing these out in maybe 2 wks so if you're interested you can likely get one more opinion very soon. I'm actually going to test fit the 17's first and those will be delivered late next week. I know those 17's may need spacers, but i want to see them.

Yes another opinion would be great. I really dont want to run spacers, likely the 16's would be good enough for me at this point. Thanks in advance for any help.

Later in beans thread he switches to 17's with a -6 vs. a -25 which I presume is the backspacing? Again I'm not real clear on the numbers here so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

After scratching my head endlessly and drawing up a lot of sketches, I think I finally figured out how the numbers work out. The -6mm and -25mm numbers are offsets, and are tied to backspacing indirectly. An 8-1/2" rim is 8.5'" wide inside-to-inside of the bead. One half of the rim width is 4.25" (centerline to inside of bead). Add the width of the bead (assume 0.25") to get 4.5". With zero offset, the backspacing is roughly 4.5". With a -6mm (about 0.25") offset, the backspacing is roughly 4.25". With a -25mm (about 1") offset, the backspacing is roughly 3.5". Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm looking through the thread again and I did not notice where you mentioned the brand of wheel or the specific model or part number of the wheel in in teh pics...mind sharing the details. I presume the wheels work both front and back with no rubbing or interference with the caliper or steering linkage..etc?

I have the 17 inch level 8 trackers going on today, and my tie rods are not rubbing.

i was actually more concerned when i saw how close the ~33's come to touching the shackles. That also appears to have enough room for no rubbing.

EDIT: The passenger side is rubbing the edge of the wheel when i turn 80-90% of the normal radius to the left.

That's great! Maybe the 17 gave them more clearance.
