Ok long story short I sold a jeep and bought a 97 40th anniversary Land Cruiser. Being new to Toyota I am having to learn as I go as I want to do the majority of the work my self and with it not being my DD it will be ok to stretch projects out over just the weekend.
All that being said I got out of it today and noticed these trails of watery grease coming from the lugs on my front passenger rim. As if the centrifugal force was pulling it away from the hub. So my question is, does it look like it's coming from the birfield axel and making its way out or is there something internal in the hub? If more pictures are needed please let me know.
Thanks

Axle job time

This is probably the end all, be all axle rebuild thread. I print it out and put it in a binder in case I need to reference it.

Front Axle Rebuild - For FAQ

There are ALOT. Also YouTube also has videos walking you through the process as well.

Pop that center cap off and have a look!

Thanks guys. 1-10, 1 being oil change 10 being tranny rebuild how difficult?

3-4 tops.

It's just messy & time consuming - when you read & see it's just about prepping with a bunch of supplies & a few tubes grease on top of a gasket / rebuild kit.

It beats the heck out of a HG as your "1st major self-serve job" on your 80.

Welcome to mudville and congrats on your new 80. I'm not a pro at this, but I'd say it's leaking between the knuckle spindle and the knuckle. There appears to be some leakage around the knuckle ball, but more coming from the other side of the brake dust shield. You need to pull the wheel off and probably the hub to get a close look at the knuckle spindle area. If it's the spindle to knuckle gaskets (2) or dust seal (1) they can be changed easily. If it's the axle shaft seal (inside the axle housing) you have to pull the birfield joint and axle to get to it. Good luck finding the leak, and let us know what you found and how you fixed it.

Not difficult at all...BUT... Very time consuming as well as very messy. Both sides CAN be done in a long weekend, but 1st timers might wat to plan on a weekend for each side.

Get a 54mm thin sided socket, get familiar with the written instructions & videos and you shouldn't have any problems that you can't figure out...and you always have Mud as your back up.

axel / bearings =:banana: with hardest mechanical part is dealing with snap ring

birf =:banana: with the hardest part being separating the tie-rod and separating the birf to repack it (another snap ring to fight)

absolutely a DIY job....read the numerous post...watch the vids - no reason at all to take to stealership .....

Ok second part of the question. Though this isn't my DD I am trying to prioritize a few things I need done; head gasket (hiring someone for that one) elocker actuator front and rear service and axle rebuild. How would you guys prioritize these three jobs?

Unless your HG is an issue right this minute:

1. Axle
2. HG - if needs anything, if not leave it be. Do your PHH & a fuel filter, call it good.
3. Locker Motors

PHH is that the heater hose I have heard about?

First thing to do is take off center cap and then small dust cap. See if the snap ring is on the end of axle. If it is off the axle and inside dust cap.... that is your problem. If the snap ring will not stay on due to wear on the very end of axle (birfield), it will allow the seal to leak exactly like in your photo. The only solution to this particular issue is another birfield. Ask me how I know.

Awesome thanks I will probably tear in to it a bit this weekend

Have your knuckle parts hot tanked before you re install. I have done with and without hot tanking the parts. It makes the job a breeze when stuff is clean.

Or drop them in a bucket of diesel to clean them.
