I drive my 80 quite often, say 500-600 miles a month. It’s think it’s the perfect vehicle other than mpg. Everyone’s always saying how slow their 80s are which I don’t really agree with. They’re obviously not fast but how fast are y’all trying to go?? I’ve desired passing power and maybe some more grunt on steep hills but for the most part I can accelerate/cruise just as i need without really wringing it out. I split the rest of my driving time between a Subaru Outback 3.6 and some seasonal summer cars, all of which are faster than the 80 but the performance of the 1fz feels just right for the platform. I’m also a speed limit guy maybe straying +/-5mph. Im on 33s, a 2.5in lift and stock gearing. But I would LOVE to LS swap eventually.

'04 GX, changed to 3-seater to accommodate ski equipment:

The hum from the MT tires on the 80 becomes a bit much on trips like that.

The pic is on the way home, outside of Bluff, UT, with Comb's Ridge in the background. And no, we didn't drive Comb's Wash; that's just a poser shot...

I've often been tempted to purchase one of these. They're an outstanding platform. I'd still take my stock 80 with Defender LTX tires and new body mounts and suspension bushings on a road trip rather than a GX. I'm always looking for a GX without the Nav screen. Knowing me, I'd pay good money for the screen and do the conversion myself.

09 GX. Left the LX in Dallas... miss the fat truck...

Our GX is great except the passenger side bolsters dig into my sides. Kinda short wheel base relative to the 80. So theres that.

Does the e36 have the 4.0??? Very cool

4.6 litre. Starts out as the 4.0 from the E34 of the era but has a new head cast for it, higher compression Mahle pistons. 333 hp and 350lb-ft torque. Max torque is seen at something like 2500 RPM, so this car is very fun to drive. I had an E39 M5 for a while as well. I think the M5 is probably faster, but the Alpina felt faster.

Shot of the engine bay. You can actually just see the E39 M5 front wheel in the background.

Very cool, and thanks for sharing. I had owned a couple E36 M3s sedan back in the days, and those are fun cars to toss around on the track. Are those crank hp/tq numbers? What do the 4.6L put out on a mustang dyno? I was just curious as my E36 M3 puts out 265whp and 230tq on a set of Schrick cams and M50 manifold, OBD1 conversion, etc.

My 2010 Subaru Forster that my kids might have qualified for a “grossest car detail ever” you tube video. I sort of hate it, but with some studded snows I just abuse it and take it skiing with the crumb crunchers. I sold a 2002 taco xtracab TRD 5 speed for this family wagon, so yea I cray a little inside when I see it, but I’m glad the kids destroyed this one and not my cruiser.

Love it. I might be crazy but is the C pillar, rear quarter, and trunk lid specific to the alpina? That’s not the same as an e36m is it??

Published crank numbers. I haven't put it on a dyno to see what it puts out. I'd like to, but a few things have stopped me...mainly the preventative maintenance of replacing the head gasket. Original head gaskets were made with organic materials. It needs to be upgraded with a MLS head gasket. I can't remember if it's the E39 M5 one or the X5 M with the 4.8 litre. I haven't had a look to check if it was done on my car prior to my ownership, but I doubt it was. I might be getting close to being on borrowed time, or maybe with the age and kms on the car maybe mine isn't as prone as some others. Need to look into it more or get it done at some point, but right now it's not top priority.

After getting my Quick Jack and rolling around under it, more needs replacing that I knew about. At 26 years old now pretty much anything rubber needs to be replaced. I have all the parts to do a front end refresh and that's what I'm starting on soon.

But other stuff like the guibo, engine mounts, transmission mounts etc. all need to be done as well. Not so bad that it's undriveable, but I need to start collecting parts.

The spoiler on the trunk and lip on the front are pretty much the only Alpina specific body parts. There actually aren't a ton of parts that are Alpina specific. Those that are, are definitely pricey. Some got Alpina specific interior trim. Mine only got the wood trim on the door panels and center console which I was originally disappointed about. However, it was pointed out to me that when it needs interior work at some point it will be much cheaper and easier to make original than if it had the Alpina specific fabric on the seats and panels.

Most of the work Alpina had to do to these cars was body modifications to cram the V8 in there.

That's pretty cool, but working in that engine bay looks like the stuff of nightmares!

So looks like a early 95 front grille and side markers with Alpina goodies. Care to share any interior pics?

So far, it's actually not bad. My father in law has a TT Z32 300zx (Fairlady). Now that thing is a nightmare to work on!

I don't remember the BMW production date, but I believe it was sometime in '95. It started out as a 328i with M package and then goes to the Alpina factory in Buchloe. I don't have any recent photos. Here's one front and one rear that are old from just after I got the car.

I've replaced the cracked emblem on the shift knob, replaced the shift boot, CD 43 head unit, removed the screen mount from the dash, swapped the center console for one with an arm rest and cup holders, and replaced the door cards with straight black ones to preserve the originals. I have little gremlins, I mean...kids that like to destroy everything, so the wood trim stuff was taken off after they started pulling the bits off the panels.

The drivers floor mat is a bit rough. There was a guy that used to make replacements, but he doesn't do it any more. Not shown in the photos, but I have the same Alpina mats for the rear as well. Cluster is Alpina specifc too with 300 km/hr speedo. One option I really wish the car had is the VDO gauges showing oil temp etc. Pretty cool little optional extra that very few cars got.

Love it. Thanks for sharing. It reminds me of my 98 M3 sedan. The 95 grille have a more square looking kidneys, while the 96+ has a more rounded look. Very rare and love the color as well.
Here is my 98 Boston Green
