67 here.

Anyone know by year how many 40's were imported into the US? If that ratio doesn't closely match what these numbers say, then either the sample size is too small (very likely), or there are categories of Cruisers that have returned to the ground before their time (very sad).

Any estimates on how many in total are still on the road?

Kinda like rare coins... the fewer minted, the more valuable the survivors are.

Mine is a '79 but its titled as a "72.........Long story but it gets me past all state inspections.:D

I forgot what year mine is.

Hey General Sherman, how about more pics of that FJ40BBQ?

Born date 12/73
Picture 017.webp

Mine's titled as a 79 and started life as a 79(built Feb 1979) but as the wrong people got their hands on the rig it lost a LOT of it's original parts. It presently consists of a 75 2F, 73 t-case, 74 cowl, 77 hood, 75 top with one top side from an 81, one ambulance door from a 81 and the other from a 77.

Hi All:

Well, my FJ40 was originally manufactured in 11/73. So, it is registered as a 1974 vehicle. But, it contains parts, major and minor from '68 through '78 TLCs and '68 to '94 Chevys.

Chassis and front clip are original '74. The rear 2/3s body tub is from a '68. There are lots of '78 TLC parts present; disc brake frontend, 2F engine, and the factory fully electronic ignition. Also have a mid-1970s H41 four speed (Aussie import.) GM parts include the '68 Impala PS gearbox, '76 Blazer PS pump, '78 Monte Carlo brake calipers, '91 K1500 brake rotors, and '94 Camero bucket seats!

My rig was not stock when I got it, and I have furthered that transformation. :grinpimp:

Regards,

Alan

Stock, factory soft top 6/75 with a de-smogged 76 2F

i dont remember exactly which website i saw that reported it, but the '72 and '73 model years are the most common in the USA, with ~11,000 FJ40s being imported each year. IIRC, by the time 1980 came along, there were less than 1,000 being imported each year.

sample size too small, or rust has claimed most of them! my 10/71 is still truckin, although it is as much FJ60 as it is FJ40 nowadays. i agree with IDave, shoulda broke out the early 70s models!

From RMC's site. Not sure if it is 100% accurate and obviously not complete but here you go:

How many Land Cruisers were Sold per Year
in the U.S. from 1973 through 1983?

Year....Units Sold....Series / Models

1973......11,218.......FJ-40 / FJ-55
1974.......8,204........FJ-40 / FJ-55
1975.......9,050........FJ-40 / FJ-55
1976.......9,236........FJ-40 / FJ-55
1977.......9,924........FJ-40 / FJ-55
1978.......8,858........FJ-40 / FJ-55
1979.......5,716........FJ-40 / FJ-55
1980.......3,058........FJ-40 / FJ-55
1981.......2,027........FJ-40 / FJ-60
1982.......3,088........FJ-40 / FJ-60
1983.......4,805........FJ-40 / FJ-60

Great info.

Based on that data, we can look at everything after 1974.

Yr.........Import....% of total...Sample....% of Sample
1974......8204.........13%..........31............20% (Over represented)
1975......9050.........14%..........21............14% (bang on)
- 1977...19160.......30%..........45.............30% (bang on)
1978.......8858........14%..........27............18% (Over represented)
- 1983....18694.......29%..........28............18% (Under represented)

Total......63966.......................152............ .24% sample size

With a sample size of .24% the percentages are pretty close!

The 1979 - 1983 group is the only one that's under-represented... dust to dust
