What wheels are you using for 37x12.50 tires on a FJ40?

Shopping for some new tires for my SOA FJ40. Want to go 37" radials. Hard to impossible to find 37x12.50-15 tires anymore unless its Interco. Seems 37x12.50-17 tire size is plentiful. However, having some difficulty confirming what wheel will work for this tire size on an FJ40. I'm thinking 17x9 but not sure what backspacing works on a FJ40 with this wheel size. Anyone have recommendations for a wheel that works?

Or am I off track and should be looking at a different tire/wheel diameter, 16"?

I think your right choosing 17” vs 16”, as 16” are already less available. But am curious what you figure out re: back spacing.

There are not many options in a backspace that work well for our rigs. If you want to run beadlocks, Raceline has some nice 17" steel wheels in a 3.5" backspace as does Sidetracked Offroad. Aluminum are also available, but the cost goes up.

Decided to get this thing and maybe I can figure out what might work. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DB7S74LG?psc=1&smid=A2GIW63HISGAJL&ref_=chk_typ_quicklook_titleToDp

My fj40 is SOA with stock width axles, has hi-steer. Now it has 36x13.50-15 irok bias which are terrible on road. Want something about the same size in a radial.

my goal is to fit 37x12.50 tires. Had them before on this fj40 but those were 37x12.50-15 on 15x10 with 3.75" backspacing. Can't get many tires in that size anymore so figured 17" was the way to go, but backspacing choice on 17" wheels seems to be lacking options. Choices are probably fine for a lot of other vehicles that need big amounts of backspace.

You are in the same boat as me with my 55. Stock width axles (same as a 40), SOA, and the same size Irok bias ply tires. Pretty sure my wheels are 15x10 with a 2.5-3" backspacing and 1.25" wheels spacers that I would like to get rid of.

Thanks for the links. The steel wheel version is out of stock. I've not decided if I want to go beadlocks but probably not. I'll likely go with street legal wheels and something I think will balance pretty well.

FYI, Method Wheels look nice and have a series with "Bead Grip" and DOT approval. However, BS is 4.62" on a 17x9 wheel and the price is almost $400 per wheel. Method Race Wheels | Off-Road Wheels - https://www.methodracewheels.com

I bought a set of 17" rims from TOYOTA - https://www.stealthcustomseries.com/collections/toyota. They have the right offset for a FJ40 and I have 35 12.5 tires mounted. They also fit the hub diameter.

The minimum backspace is 3.75” for 15” rim. If 17”, they’ll go over the steering rod end, so there’s not anymore need to be that small backspace. Dipends of the tire and the mods, when they’ll hit the leaf springs or steering components.

Rear wheel wells are quite close to tires, so something like 3.75” (or less) would be good backspace because of that to prevent rubbing when flexing.

You’ll have to excuse that I don’t know what steering on this Fj40.

If you have a stock steering setup, 33x12.50 tires will touch the relay rod that goes from the steering box to the bell crank at right and left lock when the suspension travels. SOA could help this, but it would be worse with 37s. If you have eliminated all the extra linkages with a power steering conversion, it is much less likely.

I ran 33x12.50s on 15” with 3.25” backspacing. I have a 16” spare from a newer Tacoma that stick further in but clear the TREs on the front because of the extra diameter.
