I am having my windshield replaced this weekend by Safelite (they have done me right before, and all our local glass shops have a ton of bad reviews). I am supplying an OEM windshield seal.

The FSM calls for the removal of a long list of items to replace the windshield, including the hood (!). Please weigh in with your experience regarding what you did or did not remove when you had your windshield replaced, and if you wish you had done it differently. Thanks in advance.

FSM Recommendations (Page BO-46 of my FSM):
REMOVAL
1. REMOVE HOOD
2. REMOVE WIPER ARMS
3. REMOVE COWL LOUVER
4. REMOVE INNER REAR VIEW MIRR
5. REMOVE PERSONAL LIGHT ASSEMBLY
6. REMOVE PERSONAL LIGHT COVER
7. REMOVE SUN VISORS AND HOLDERS
8. REMOVE ASSIST GRIPS
9. REMOVE FRONT PILLAR GARNISHES
10. LOOSEN ROOF HEADLINING

When I had my windshield replaced all that was removed was the windshield and seal as a single unit. No need to remove any of the items listed
The installer cleaned all of the mating surfaces really well and then put the seal around the glass with some black sealer between the glass & seal , fed rope into the seal channel, placed the screen on the car and from the inside pulled the rope to get the seal onto the inside and that was it.

That list is pretty accurate. You can skip the hood removal if you have a really small screwdriver to remove the cowl louver. The process has the potential to get real messy. Remember that gasket needs to be sealed on both the glass side and the body side.

That list is ridiculous. Nothing was removed from mine when replaced. Not even the wipers. Done by Safelight.

I think the cowl being removed would be a bad idea.

X2. Also by Safelite and they sealed the windshield to the gasket and the gasket to the body, per the FSM. No idea why you would remove the cowl or the hood (or most of the other stuff).

Thanks, guys. I looked at my rig and also wondered why the heck the cowl would be removed, because the seal ends sitting on top of the cowl. I appreciate the confirmation. Thanks a bunch.

FSM does in fact say to do this but I don't know if many installers do. I'd make sure your installer is doing this extra step as it'll help with shimmy sounds and water leaks.

Hopefully your local Safelite has a seasoned tech like mine does. He's bee in the business for over 30 years and has done his fair share of TLCs.

Our LCs are very similar to many other vehicles of the era (when it comes to windshields, almost every car of similar age is the same, save for the moldings and trim).

If they mess anything up, it's on them and make sure you take them to task to cover workmanship as part of their warranty.

IMHO removing the cowl along with the wiper arms may give more access when installing the assembled gasket/glass into the body. The gasket also has a small lip that the cowl slides under IIRC. To remove the 6 screws when removing the cowl a small 1/4" drive ratchet with a 1/4" socket and short #3 Phillips or JIS bit should fit under the rear edge of the hood. FWIW

I understand that OEM windshields are no longer available. Is there an aftermarket one that people use? My 80 is a 1995, with original but has the potential to catch stones as I drive gravel roads a bid.

Are you behind others on said gravel roads? Usually a rock has to hit with some force in order to chip, let alone crack the windshield. Glass can be very unpredictable but typically low speed impacts don't cause damage, unless previous damage is present.

Edit: another white 100 in Syr! My father has a white LX, lives there also.

Run up to the ADKS each week. Looking to have a windshield “in stock” unless (God forbid) I need aftermarket if that is available.

Life in the great white north of NY!

My favorite windshield brand is the PGW, but not everyone carries this brand. PGW is Toyota OEM glass from what I've seen. Second would be the Pinkerton brand of glass. I avoid Safelite at all costs 😁

So, the plot thickens. The glass installer found rust under the seal, and we hit the pause button so I can take the truck to a body shop and have that repaired. I'm not going to put a windshield in with that kind of cancer lurking.

Bummer 😳

Yeah, I'm actually glad we discovered it. I might be keeping this truck for another decade. Fixing this will be cheaper than buying a GX550.

I supplied my own OEM windshield rubber, which my installer said he was happy to see.
