Hey Ih8mud folks, I have a 1977 california fj40 with a cracked manifold, So, of course it wont pass smog, Now, Icannt find any used or new california manifolds available, anywhere. I would try exhaust headers, but they are not allowed in california. So, does any one have any suggestions?
can the ARB be contacted? and how?

There are people that can weld cast iron manifolds - that's there job. The one guy I knew did work on marine engines - world wide.

Brazing cast iron is a more easily found skill. Lot depends on the nature of the crack/manifold.

I would think a regular cast iron manifold could be Gerry rigged to work close enough to pass inspections.

Hey thanks, I will try to find a welder who can take this on, it might be ok but unfortuntaely the Federal model manifolds wont fit without revamping the entire exhaust? at least this is what I was told.

I have used Muggy Weld products. Iron can be fickle. If not cooled correctly, it can crack. Preheating may be required. Then very slow (hrs)cooling covered inside a bucket of sand. A good welding shop or machine shop can handle this.

The thermo manifold is so unusual...I think i'd consider just switching it out for a federal style
and then adding the CARB compliant catalytic converter. It would almost assuredly work better
to have a modern cat on the thing. As to whether CA smog inspectors would ding you on having
a better/different system....I don't know.

Hey Tom, you can switch to a Federal manifold. I did that to my '78 thirty years ago or more. You will have to reconfigure the exhaust head-pipe and the egr piping, because the CA manifold is taller than the Fed, but it's pretty straight forward.

hey thanks for the encouragement, I guess I dont have the confidence to do it myself, but I will check with a mechanic who might be able to do it, I bet I d have to add a cat converter though, have any pictures of your rig?

I would also try and call Sor … say what you will about them… I have always had great luck calling and talking with them

I also second Mark aka marksoffroad

He could very well have one

Btw …. Where is it cracked? Pics?
thanks Johnny C, I did try SOR, no help other than 'good luck'. I havent tried Mark though I think I will do that thanks . Crack that I have discovered is on the left hand side 'ear', where it mates to the intake manifold, aI haven t seen more, but have not yet pulled the whole think off. to inspect.

I will try Mark, then

I heard carb is no longer testing emissions. Is that incorrect?

Hey thanks White stripe, would it be nice if these were already in place? I have tried to contact the ARB in california to discuss with them my problem, Of course all I get is
I'm away from home at the moment, but I will take some photos when I get home.
thanks, did you do it yourself?
an answer bot, no real person, All I can say is that I hope Mr Trump with do something quick, MY feeling is that the arb spends tons of money on making a complicated and extensive web site but no people to help.

well the california arb is un reachable, only machine bots will answer, no real persons pick up the phone. It would be nice, think I will consider switching to a FEd model

Yep. I got a Federal manifold and the associated EGR pipe from Mark A. I don't remember if I also got the head pipe from him, but I may have. They're easy to replace if you have the stock Federal parts. It's more work if you have to custom fit other parts.

2nd vote for brazing. Find a plumber and give him a coat hanger. It'll be good as new.
