Curious what Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder things you guys do? Here are a few selected examples for me:

When changing the oil, I lay the stuff out and come into the garage from errands, toss on the overalls and try to get the plug out within 3 minutes of shutdown to maximize outflow speed and prevent particulates from settling. I also pull the oil cap so it just rockets out.

Our garage attic stairs only come down if whichever 80 is parked on that side is moved back a ways. Rather than start it to move it, I prefer to push it back and forth. Ironically, I have done this so many times over the years (at least 100 times) that I can easily feel the difference in friction between cold wheel bearings sitting over night and warm ones from recent use. Our headlamp switches are always on but I remember to turn them off before turning the key on so I can shift to N to avoid a needless headlight cycle...

When I go into the garage to get something out of the Cruiser glovebox or front seats, I go to the front passenger door instead of wearing on the driver's door.

Whenever I think of it, I give the rear washer a quick squirt to keep fresh fluid that has not evaporated off its alcohol anti freeze component in the line.

When I vacuum the interior, I carefully use the crevice tool on every stitched seam on the seat bottom cushion. While at Toyota, one of the seat leather vendors that came for our color and trim annual show told me that grit settling in these natural crevices progressively cuts the stitching and this is the only reason threads fail. My seat seams are all strong and tight after 13 years.

I used to have the high cold start idle until the head gasket replacement last month. Over the years, I developed a habit of 'false shifting' from P into N. The idle jumps as the engine electronics expect the load. Then I'd simultaneously put the heater on High and press the brakes which would briefly load the engine and slow it as I shifted into R to reduce the shift shock.

Given a choice in the parking lot of a store, on a hot day I'll park with the rear toward the sun to reduce heat load.

If turning on the A/C, I'll try to pick a time with slow engine RPMs such as at a stop light instead of while whizzing along to ease wear on the A/C clutch.

OK, enough. I could easily go on.....just stuff I do to subconsciously make operating the vehicle more complex and interesting to me.

Wow, Doug. Not even sure what to say after reading all that. Were you on a couch staring up at the ceiling as you dictated that whole thing? :grinpimp:

Seriously, though, worst thing I do is tell people to keep their :censor: feet off the dash in the front passenger seat...

...OK, I also minimize wiper use, turn O/D off in the city, re-adjust seat belts passengers leave tangled, drain/fill my coolant far too often and do the bubble test often with great paranoia, I don't apply hard-throttle until my dig. temp. gauge reads 187F, I do the neutral->ebrake->park shifting technique described here, start the rig with my driver door open, 5 clicks tilt on driver's headrest, then back, then 5 clicks again...ok I'll stop now.

When I want my seats vacuumed properly I drop the truck off at Doug's...:flipoff2:

And I try to get out to pass gas.......;)

I always wash from the top down.
When others are entering/exiting the vehicle I wait till all the other doors are closed before closing mine.
When changing oil I always spill just a little someplace...

wow doug, that is impressive,

only thing I got liek that is I dont run the AC wile idling cuch as at a drive through to prevent heat soak, now you have me wondering about clutch cycle counts.

I line up object with the spots on the windows and tap my toes to each dashed line that passes  .................Oh wait....you were referring to maintenance procedures........ :whoops: :o

I always tell my wife and kids to lift their butts off the seat when exiting the truck. I don't want them sliding their butt off the edge of the seats to prevent the leather stitches from wearing out. :flipoff2:

- Compulsive Complaining: I bitch when people slam the doors.

- Compulsive Basting: Turkey baster thing with the power steering fluid, every two weeks.

- Compulsive Cleaning: Extra picky about residual "grime" ever giving the appearance of poor maintenance. I am a poster boy for Simple Green and paper towels.

- Compulsive Adjusting: Screws, bolts and nuts...constantly checking everything within a 24" diameter of whatever I am working on.

- Compulsive Disassembly: I'll take something apart on the truck that is perfectly fine so that later, when it breaks I'll know what to do to fix it.

- Compulsive Clicking: Gas cap. I only click it once. Any more is like fingernails on a blackboard.

- Compulsive Tilting: I drop the tilt it as far as it will go then come back up one notch. Even if I am only backing it out of the garage.

Holy :censor:, I think I AM a freak.

Yes, that is a serious crime. Also, I had a girlfriend who once started banging her cell phone off the dash thinking it would get juice to the phone battery. The words that followed were words I hadn't said to a female before or after. 'Twasn't pretty.

In regards to the AC clutch fan.
Doesn't the compressor cycle on and off by itself anyways?
So you can't really control when it turns itself on.

Correct me if I am wrong. But doesn't the compressor work with the pressure switch to control the min and max pressure in the system? So when you turn the AC on the compressor kicks on and builds pressure up. The the compressor shuts off until its needed again. Once the pressure drops to far down, the pressure switch tells the compressor to come back on.

But hey, I am just as anal about things.
Always do an oil change hot.
Wash top to bottom
Neatly place seat belt back before closing door.
Gently shut doors - I hate people slamming them.
Check fluids very regualy
Give my truck warm up time and cool down time
Won't fuel up at non trustworthy (old tanks) gas stations.
Won't shop at certian gas stations
Keep it clean, inside and out and underneath.
My truck is my baby, it gets treated right.
etc... etc....

But the worst for me is slaming doors. It drives me NUTS.
I also hate the feet on the dashboard. Its a dashboard not a foot rest.

Glad to see I am not alone,
Cheers,
Nick

I should also add that as picky as I am about things. people are more important then my truck.
Even if they start abusing it, I try to be as ploite to them as possible.

I'll chime in on the slamming doors. I can always tell by the person shutting my doors whether they own a domestic or foreign car. I'll try to get out and close my door first to create airtight space in the cabin, thus helping to cushion the slamming of the door when using the Ford technique.

Another one is that I always wait until the fan clutch stops before I take off.

I also turn off all accessories before shutting down.

I think El Perro confessed to actually caring about the appearance of his 80!! Heh - call the press!

Not a whole lot to add. Unfortunately, I do most of the above :)

I always shake my oil bottles before opening them in order to make sure the additives (esp calcium) is in suspension. Additives can and do settle out.

I always get the oil filter element saturated with oil before screwing it on to minimize the time to full oil pressure on that first post-change start-up.

I put a very light coating of di-electric grease on the top and bottom of the air filter element to assist in stopping dirt. I also clean out the air filter can, tuna can and intake hose with WD-40 twice a year.

I routinely go under my truck with a roll of paper towels and a can of WD-40 and give anything I can touch a wipe down (haven't done this since November and I am way overdue).

I inertia drive whenever it is safe. Coasting is good, braking is bad. I make a game out of timing lights to minimize fuel and brake use. Not so much to save money, but to go easy on the truck (to make up for when I beat it offroad, I guess!). I'll also drive 15 miles to work via the tollway, and pay a dollar toll each way, rather than 12 through the light laden streets. Again, not because of economics, but to be nice to the beast.

I never slam the glove box door...always a steady push. Learned that from the old glove box door challenged Volvo 240.

Better stop now....

edit: OK, I better come clean...I change my oil way too often. In the 35,000 miles since I bought it, I have done 18 oil changes per my records. In all fairness, that includes a number of 1,500 mile intervals doing AutoRx clean and rinse cycles. But I have only gone past 3,000 miles a few times...usually find an excuse to drain before that. :princess:

Doug,

To be honest, many of the things you do I also do, albeit consciously. I've developed a habit of thinking, "OK, what can I do to prevent the needless wearing of X, Y, or Z?". In fact, before this cruiser I had the dumb habit of leaving the truck running if I got home at night and needed to find something. I would then turn off the light, including the auto dome light, before trurning off the engine to prevent loading the battery when it wasnt being charged.

The only other thing I do is step in and sit on the seat rather than sliding into it. I have found little foam bits fall from under the seat from it being crushed from when it was slid over. I haven't broached this topic with my wife yet, mainly because she'll think Im being too AR, and then she'll get annoyed (which is really uncomfortable for me).

Lastly, when I am in a hurry and I give her a little extra gas (so she'll be shifting at around 3000 RPM) I'll come off the throttle a ways (around 30%) when its about to shift so its not shifting under load. I do this every time.

Im glad Im not the only one who thinks ahead of time how to minimize the (over) use of certain parts of his truck...

Cheers

I read too many posts here.... :)

I beat the s*** out of mine! I'm rather proud of the rock rash and broken sway bar mounts that I have achieved on my various wheeling adventures. I tear up the tread on my tires and I change all the oils frequently. I also never wash it.

good thread doug, you have helped me on my 12 step program.
its nice to know im not alone

Glad to see I'm not the only nutcase. Here goes. I schedule myself to completely wax the cruiser every 4 months. Doorjams, engine area, etc. If shoes are dirty, I have the kids place them in a bag as they enter. I make sure the plastic oil info sticker that they put on your windshield after an oil change is level. If I haul anything, a blanket goes down first. And finally, if I go on vacation, the Landcruiser is always washed and "put away". I take a cab to the airport.

wow, there are no words.

The only thing that bugs the sh*t out of me is slamming doors and that applies to all vehicles. I'm with tirediron. If you perform normal mx who cares about the rest.
