Hi All:

Ah, coarse-spline pinion failure! BTDT! :frown: Glad you were able to get off the trail and home O.K.

Regards,

Alan

I drove my 40 a few hundred miles away and this happened on the trail...

I got towed to the top of the trail and made it the rest of the way as well as home via the front axle.

Oh, I may have sold both of my FJ55's as well...

finished this a couple weeks ago... my removeable aluminum fenders .. can take them off when i get to the trail... dont have a recent pic of them powdercoated yet...

Hi guys, first post. :D

- Cleaned and adjusted front and rear drums.
- Repainted headlight bezel - satin black
- Repainted wheels and bullbar - flat black
- Scored an FJ55 steering wheel to replace the nasty little aftermarket one that was on it. I was seriously getting RSI from the steering wheel when I took it wheeling on the weekend.
-Scored an FJ55 indicator switch to replace the one that I broke the first day I had the 40.
- Cleaned the soft top in anticipation of repairs.
- Added a double jerrycan carrier to the tailgate and re-located the numberplate and light.
- Bought a new latch for the tailgate to replace the nasty one which was on it as purchased.
- Added a plastic Aus army footlocker and a couple of 20mm ammo cans in the back. Still working out where I should put the ammo cans - maybe bolt them to the wheel arches?
- Looked at an FJ55 5-speed transmission - still need to research it to see if it will hook up to the BJ40 with the 13B diesel.
- Serviced the engine and checked all fluids - all OK surprisingly but I'll replace them anyway next weekend.

Here's a couple of pics of "The Gecko" as purchased -

That's not really how she looks now, but it's raining so I'll take some pics another day.

Cheers.

broke 2 bolts, broke one broken bolt remover, invented 3 new curse words....

removed:
winch
radiator
grill and rad. supports
power steering
dizzy
manifolds
driveshafts
tcase
4-spd
some flesh
clutch
front wheels (too high for hoist)
and finally the old busted up 1f

and that was by lunch when it started raining :(

assembling and painting the 2F tonight

Excuse the dirt - we had a massive dust storm last night, so the 40 looks like she's been to Cape York Peninsula and back.

just finished up this lil gem this am................that was a nervous bit of drilling.

just warming up to drill that hole in a perfectly good fender on the 80

New Battery

Finally had to put a new battery in the 40 after 8 years. Actually pinched the battery from another Cruiser, hence the 5/08 sticker
Went with 34 series instead of the larger 27 series. Same cranking amps and a little smaller. The battery is not as tall so the stock retainer bolts are too long so had to turn(machine) up some alloy ones that so you can take them on and off without a wrench.
Found the material in the dreaded scrap pile we all seem to collect.

Thanks jb

After breaking both my original headlights on the front tow hooks (apron slipped out of my hands,) I installed Roundeyes. Much, much better than the faded, dim stockers. Still contemplating installing the relay. I'll run 'em the way they are for a bit and then decide....

Designed a set of soft doors for the 40. I've been looking at the 40 porn here on ih8mud and I've been thinking I'd like a set for the Gecko, but figured that because they are cool, they're probably illegal here. Then I was informed that these are legal here in Australia, but must have some anti-intrusion and use stock door latches to meet Aussie vehicle ADRs, so here's what I came up with:

Shell material: green canvas or black vinyl (green canvas shown in diagram for clarity - colour sucks)

Window material: clear marine vinyl with zipper closure (window is more rounded than in diagram)

Hinge: Stock 40-series door hinge - each attaches with three bolts that go through the shell and into captive nuts welded to the hinge mounts on the AI bar.

Latch: stock 40 series door latch

Door Handle: not specified - need to see what works.

Top closure: prickly side velcro stitched to shell - just to stop it flapping around at the top. Fluffy side velcro is stitched to soft top.

Frame: 10mm round bar welded (shown as grey in diagram)

Anti-intrustion and hinge/latch mounts: welded flat bar (shown as black in diagram) - thickness and materials depends on ADRs

Top of lower half of door frame: flat aluminium bar (not shown). This is bolted to round bar door frame and holes are drilled for tabs of upper half of door. Depending on how it works, might add short sections of 10 or 10.5mm ID tube to receive tabs.

Top half tabs: 10mm round bar with holes drilled for locking pins.

Weather seal: (not shown) from Clark rubber and glued on with sikaflex or maybe seamgrip - need to see what works.

Interior - showing frame and internals

And a quick photochop showing the doors and a notional canvas soft top

Possible design adjustments - add an aluminium or sheet metal skin with canvas or vinyl covering.

Can anyone see any major issues with the design apart from flapping from the shell material?

Finished painting the frame. Tore down both axles, blasted and POR'd all the 60 series knuckles and stuff to start the disk conversion. Blasted the front axle housing and primed and painted. Started into the h55 to get ready to pull the h42 and install it on the B.....oh it has begun again!:clap:
