Looks like a repurposed fog light to me. I had a yellow lens one in that position for years. Now have waterproof 40 W LED that will do white, amber, or flashing in amber or white. Very bright - amber easier on night vision when there is snow floor.

My 72 has a rounded top fuel cut out.

We could ask the CIA to zoom and enhance the data plate in the pic above.

SOR’s VIN chart puts this as an October 72 build. So 73 model.

Making my way through my partial re-wiring/wiring clean-up. Replaced all the wiring plugs behind/under the gauge cluster. Discovered at some point the wiring from the harness to the lights switch was replaced, which explains the odd colors. Ordered some correct wiring from Coolerman so will be replacing that soon. Definitely have a better understanding of some of the truck wiring going through it wire by wire. Still not sure where some of it goes but have a grasp on most of it.
Been taking it slow. Replaced most of the rear taillights wiring. Was all exposed and brittle. Before final connections and sealing it all up, tested everything to make sure it was working. Success. Replaced a couple of engine wires, would then connect everything back up to test. At one point it wouldn't start. Then realized I forgot to hook the battery back up. So far so good.
Interestingly enough, the group of wires going to the light switch, playing around the old butt connectors, two came apart. Had rewired some engine stuff so wanted to make sure it would start. Got nothing. Everything was connected. Re-connected the 2 wires that came apart in the light bundle and the truck started. Not sure what they are going to, only 18ga wires but prevented it from running. More exploring to come.

Also got my new 15" steel wheels back from painting. Replacing the wagon wheels that are on there currently. They look really good. Will take some pictures once I get them mounted.
 
I'm making the most of winter by gradually stripping off paint and repainting panels.
I slapped paint stripper and cling film on the bonnet about 2 weeks ago, and started scraping today.
50 years worth of paint and filler has taken more work than i expected tbh, but the hot air gun has made it possible... half way there.

Only one small hole in the front and a dent on top hidden in the filler so far...
 
I bumped into something embarrassing the other day and knocked my fuel door pull off the fuel door. I'll find it when the snow melts. In the meantime, to access the gascap I fashioned a pull I am naming the Mickey Rubicon Memorial fuel door pull.

Didn't catch on fire or have the wheels fall off!

There was a coolent leak at the rear heater and an oil leak from the valve cover both seem to be resolved with a little tightening of fasteners. There was also something of a banging or clanging while driving that I was unable to identify so still working my way out of the can of worms.

Took it down to Anza Borrego State Park and wheeled it harder than planned. The truck ran exceptionally well, and it wasn’t until the end of the day that I realized why!

I’ve never seen 23” of manifold vacuum on ANY vehicle at idle, and only rarely on decel. It was actually idling down the trail with 22 inches, crawling over everything like a Sherman tank.

Ahh damn it.

To be fair, could have been way worse.
 
After 12 years of working on FJ40s, I am convinced Toyota engineered them for people with little hands ;)
