driver side valve cover and spark plug gaskets replaced - before and after cleanup:

It wasnt leaking but i had to open it when i dropped the pcv grommet into the valve cover, then snapped 1 vc bolt . So what should have been a 5 min job became 2 week ordeal. Anyway, its all done and now good peace of mind. Not sure how many previous owner she had before me but i'm the first in 23 yrs to do these gaskets.

Thanks for the push to go ahead and do this. I think I’ll find heavier thread next time so I can pull the slack a little harder. I got greedy a couple of times and did too many passes before switching threads to catch up and tighten. Broke the threads… had to re start. And yea took about 2 hours start to finish. We’ll see how long she holds. Also learned that you can’t bend a needle near as far as you think.

This has been a big week for my ‘04. Had the TB, WP, Thermostat, pulley’s all replaced.

Had intentions to do it myself but life has kept me stupid busy. Now just need to figure out if my shocks/springs need a replacement sooner than I wanted. There’s a noticeable squeak over small/large bumps in the rear. Measurement of tire/frame shows no differences, and there’s no noticeable leaks.

Also found a used mint-condition rear cargo carrier for the next road trip.

Belt tensioner and idler pulley at 224k miles. Should’ve done it when I did timing kit 5k miles ago but didn’t have parts on hand.

Had to replace fenders due to the rust underneath creeping its way out. First the steps had to come off, but the very first bolt broke out. That was a trend for yesterday and today. Looks nice with the steps off though. Hope I bought enough spare hardware..

Still waiting on some mechanical parts for AC work so spent the last week refinishing the driver seat (filler plus SEM classic coat 17293) and removing wood and refinishing the center shift bezel area.

Love those 6” Rigid SAEs from the controlled cutoff to it being road legal and how wide the spread is. Props to Dissent’s design as well as it is pointed a little towards the ditch making the coverage more wide.

All fenders rust at that spot due their stupid design. Even with fender liners in place, there is a nice pocket at the bottom of the fenders to collect moisture and dirt and rust at will. Check for rust on the body side too. I'd recommend coating with a rust covertor primer and then putting down a truck bedliner type product on the inside of the fenders before installing them back on.

Another area that loves to rust on these trucks is the front bottom corner of the rear wheen arches. There too, Toyota inexplicably decided to leave some pockets to gather moisture and rust

Finally, I would take a close look at the rear lowest part of the quarter panel (under the rear bumper side wings). Sunroof drains terminate there and can easliy flood those corners, leading to rust.

Nope, not planning on it and based on what it looks right now I think I just have to crank the TBs slightly.
I already got the Dobinsons in (weight range 0-220lbs). As
- the vehicle is generally rated/ made for 7-8 people and we're only 4
- there will not be any kind of interior build out and
- it looks like the rear is fairly high already
I'm not planning on changing anything further. But will see.

Picked up the stuff last Wednesday, but missed a bag of hardware for the tire carrier. So will finally see how the rear is sitting on the weekend. Then measure front/ rear height, adjust the front properly (think I'm too low for the Dobinson UCA) and then have it aligned again.

Will show pics all around once done on the weekend.

Quick question: Are you guys typically soldering the wires for aux lights to the existing wiring? Or using crimp stuff?

Very cool, yeah. Looking forward to have the fogs and sequential blinkers running. Hate cables so my main challenge is still ahead of me :-D

Yep, crazy because when I bought the truck a couple years ago the rust was not this bad. But it seems like from the moment I got it, the rust spread like wildfire. I definitely treated the inside before installing back on.

now to see if I can salvage the trim moulding pieces from the old fenders.

I’ve done both the crimp/shrink and solder/shrink connectors. Frankly the crimp type are a lot easier and I haven’t had any issues. Definitely use the type with heat shrink tubing, though.

Yeah, gotta find some smaller ones I think. The 22-x seems to be slightly too big for some of the small cables on (for example) the rear LED light for the license plate.
Will check for some more suitable...

Have been slowly getting the electrical sorted. Just need to wire up the rear outlets and run power for the radio to the house battery.

Installing my Dissent rear bumper and when removing the rear passenger tail light for the wiring I found a rubber tube and two unused connectors.

Anyone knows what those are for?

Looks great! Glad you were able to mount the Apex Badlands winch in there. I struggled and finally gave up mounting the same winch but in the extreme clearance bumper. Need to look for a winch that is clockable on both sides. Wish I knew this ahead of time.
