Can you help me with this fitment issue?

What is the proper depth of a pour before you take the keys out of the equation?

It always seems after approximately 54mm with a 1:10 ratio of ice that my key has trouble inserting into the ignition. Therefore I hang the keys up before I get started.

As the temps fall and I spend a day “in the field”, the keys stage on a persimmon tree and I find my way toward a leisurely stroll down to the fire ring.

No reason To purchase another winch currently. The 200 hasn’t needed it at the mall recently.

Bigger progress day. Took the kids to school. Spent about 4 hours on the 40, diagnosed and fixed a 4.7 swapped 80, ran and got parts. Worked. Drank a Big Wave. Put about 20 miles on it. It’s quite amazing how hanging an extra 100lbs off the front helped the ride quality.

I built a plate and installed my warren wench this morning. Got that all buttoned up, realized the controller is still in the wifeys 200. Line needs respooled.

Installed new Allen head stainless bolts in the fuel sender. I’ve been missing one bolt since install and it leaks when fuel is full. So hopefully I solved that. I’ll find out soon when I top it off with fuel.

Installed my mud flaps I purchased off @pigmony. Honestly I’ve been looking forward to this since I got them in the mail, there have just been bigger priorities in the short amount of time I get to work on the 40 normally.

I wired in the dual compressor and tested it. Without engine running it will fill one of my tires from completely flat to operating psi in about a minute. Fast enough for me.

Still to do :
-defrost ducts
- check belts and associated parts/ verify I tightened the alternator pulley
- top off fluids
- check bolts
- find a bottle jack to take with me
- respool winch line

Another day of no work, but probably working harder than at work. With less stress.

This morning I picked up my defrost tube and installed, lubed the speedometer, and took little man to the orthodontist.

Store run for supplies and basic fishing tackle. Everything but meat for the trip.

Packed everything minus fridge and clothes

Installed my clutch cover and old skool skid plate, checked fluids, tightened belts, tidied wires.

Worked on my oldest customers truck and rescaled the fuel gauge.

Used his truck as an anchor and re spooled the winch.

Drank a local brew - Float trip

- pack bag
- fill water canteen
- go to butcher shop and stock up
- get fuel
- acquire adult beverages
- check alternator pulley
- figure out where I’m going

Minor delay..

Pickup coil quit me on the way to daycare. A buddy towed me to the parts store which they didn’t have one.

My grandpa who lives 30 miles away walked in about the time I got parts ordered so I got a ride home from him. Grabbed the tundra, hooked up the trailer and loaded the 40.

Only 5 minutes late to tumbling.

New distributor will be here in the morning.

Throwing in the towel on the 40 and taking my Tundra. I’ve beat my head against the wall long enough to listen to the cruiser universe and leave it at home.

I got the distributor installed and timing set, look at the distributor and it’s dancing around like it has a bent shaft.
Then notice a coolant leak from the upper hose which split while setting the timing.

Sucks, but at this point I just want to go sit by the water in the sunshine and have an adult beverage.

- food in my cooler
- change in my pocket
- I’m healthy
- a great spouse to take care of our daughter while I’m gone
- I live in a country where I can take off from work and go do these things
- I don’t have a hurricane or tornado breathing down my neck
- amount countless other things.

Truly not taking my 55 year old toy on a road trip isn’t a burden, it’s a first world problem and I need to remember how fortunate I am to even have it amongst all the other great things I have.

Why dwell on the negative, there’s enough of that.

I’m headed to grab a 12 pack of big wave and to sit my ass in the water and reflect on how grateful I am for what I have.
Probably cook a bison steak for lunch that my customer brought me and enjoy being alive.

True, I hear ya.

I am more bummed for you. A trip in a 40 is different than a trip in a tundra, I have both.

The 40, to me, is like a motorcycle in the fact that you are so much more a part of the environment. That and needing to be hyper aware at all times really keys you in to the experience.

I love my tundra and it’s “get there in comfort” nature but there is a lot to be said about the 40’s “be there while you’re getting there” aspect.

I whole heartedly agree on a 40 trip. That exact description is why I wanted to take my 40.

I’ll have the opportunity again. It might be a year from now, it might be 10. But I will enjoy it that much more when I get to.
