Anyone have an explanation for the shift point on the adapter ?
It’s the reverse. Muncie 4 speeds (passenger car versions like this one) have the reverse pawl in the tail housing. That adapter is essentially replacing the tail housing so reverse needs to be integrated into it.

I would think a small block is always easier than a tundra 4.7 swap.

As far as strength, I have the older M20 in my Chevelle and it’s considered the weak one with a smaller countershaft. My Chevelle puts out north of 550 hp and an ungodly amount of torques and I’ve had no issues yet. Biggest downside with that trans may be the “wide” spread ratio between the gears but it still isn’t that wide. The M20 was used a lot in cars with tall gears: 3.08, 2.63, etc.

For what it's worth, there's been a Muncie 4-speed/ Toyota transfer case package for sale listed on ksl.com for a long time.

Here's a link:

If any one wants a Muncie 4 speed Shift plate let me know. They sell to Mudder for 24.95. The Mudder who originally wanted this plate had me design it but never bought it. I haven't printed it but would if there is any interest. Just send me a pm. This design is for the FD Vacuum Transfer Case if you want the 74 and latter 4 speed oem transfer case let me know and I can make design and make one.

I find it interesting that someone put a Muncie 4 speed in a landcruiser.
Not a great choice.
I'd use something with a granny type first gear.
Even a wide ratio Muncie 4 speed is still a car transmission and not ideal for an off road truck...
Someone made a buck selling it back in the day.

I had an M21 Muncie in a 76 I had with a 396 Chevy big block and 33’s. Was awesome on the road and the BBC power easily overcame the car trans shortcomings offroad, but that was mostly just gravel logging roads and the occasional mud hole.

I agree though, not the ideal trans in general for a landcruiser.
