Oh, sure. The next time I'll probably go with the CVJ and upgraded/longer inner boot that Juan told me about 2 years ago when he was pulling his out in the middle of Rio Puerco. For now I'm doing a boot stretch mod on the inner so that the boot ribs will not rub together and cause friction.

Not sure which kind you're referring to. The OEM kit comes with two types - a locking metal ring and a fold-over tab style metal ring. The boot stretch mod uses a strong zip tie for the narrow portion of the inner boot.

I've always used a marine grade hose clamp from McMaster Carr. If the boot slides back some you can readjust rather than trying to cut the zip tie off.
 
The OEM boot kit comes with the proper clamps so I'm not sure why any other clamps are necessary. 🤔 But, in the field, rolled edge hose clamps from McMaster Carr works a treat. Always carry a set in your spares kit for field repairs.

If i'm not mistaken, I thought Juan had some boot issue with the red outer boots from CVJ but I could be mistaken. If CVJ sells tougher outer boots, wouldn't that be enough for the lifted rigs?

They charge like $80 just for the boot so it better not...

No experience with the upgraded CVJ stuff, I always run OEM boots. I've heard the 5th gen boot kit is an upgrade to the 4th gen also because the boots have an extra rib.

Edit: also hope you didn't pay $80 per kit, they're about $50 from amtoy online system.

 
Just a FYI to the IFS owners, NAPA sells a "heavy duty" outer boot equipped CV for the 4th gens and probably for the GXs as well. I didn't find this for the 3rd gen 4runner, unfortunately. This outer boot is seriously more beefy than the inner boot.

$80 is what CVJ charges for the single inner boot!!

I paid whatever the online price was in 2020 for 2 oem bootkits from Amtoy in Albuquerque.

Thanks Ali, I'll remember that. Didn't know that about the boot on it...There's some play in my driver side tripod bearing and I'll need to replace the whole CV eventually. I was looking at the NAPA parts online yesterday and didn't see anything heavy duty (they had two and were similarly priced) but I have heard of that part before on forums and in comment sections of YouTube. Seems like a more wallet friendly option than the Colorado reman.
 
So, this link shows few different types of CV axles and one of them is "extreme environment" but doesn't really spell out any boot differences. I'm not sure if I bought this one or not but mine were brand new from NAPA and had a thicker outer boot.

Working on the '03 4runner rear parking brakes. Toyota decided to have fun with the owners by making them shoehorn these hold down springs and clips through this tiny space. :bang:. The axle flange eats a large part of the real estate, making this process a royal PITA. I have 17" rims, Toyota could've installed a larger diameter parking brake solution, just say'n!

Next, the rotor on the opposite side refused to come out. Tried porta power spreader to no avail, finally heat/beat got it out.

I don't know if the rear rotors are original but the parking brake pads sure look to be original at 375k miles o_O. They aren't really worn but the drum is definitely worn as well the rotor thickness is below spec. New pads/rotors/shoes all around for this rig. She's my tow pig, gotta have good brakes.

Sounds like those parking brake shoes would be easier to replace with the axle out of the way. Like, when replacing the wheel bearings.

Pulled out the inner joint and found a pulverized tripod bearing. Two of the rings came right off. :bang: I really thought these had some life left in them. Now I just feel dumb. Ordered two new CVs from NAPA for $291.30 after tax. I guess I will keep the OEM parts to have them rebuilt by CVJ in the future.

On the bright side, wife and I installed the new Denso alternator and a new belt tonight.

You know what's ridiculous is I actually saw all the grease left in there and said out loud "You know what?? That's actually not TOO bad!" Then I got stabbed by a shard of snap ring metal.

Oh yeah, that's that job I cursed at. Totally agree with you.

Just looked through my notes and noticed that the GX460 boots are an improvement over our 4Runner CV boots. FYI.

Looks like wrong grease (moly) was used. OEM boot kits include a tube of polyurea grease for the tripod joint and a tube of moly for the outer CVJ. Pictured is a can of this grease.

These were the original axles and boots and I've seen the OEM grease come out this color on videos with old torn boots. Even the clear Superlube I use on the suspension looks like this after the dirt hits it. But yes, the OEM boot kits I have do come with two types of grease. I do not believe that is what caused this failure, but more like when I broke the lower control arm driving into a ditch.

Wasn’t implying wrong grease caused the failure, just doesn’t look like polyurea based grease And that moly really isn’t the recommended lube for tripod style joints.
