I don't mind drum brakes at all. I told Ali one of these days I will make a video showing how I change brakes with a screwdriver and a pair of vise grips. The hardest part is remembering what goes where, but as long as you only take one side apart at a time its not bad.

Everytime I'm at the boneyard and I see the rear brake setup on a Gen3 4R I want to grab the axles. I'm pretty sure I could swap over the backing plates, and the brake junk, onto my Gen1 axles. The spring setup on my 4R is a nightmare, and the Gen3 looks way easier.

Does anyone know of if any of the radiator shops in town will do a "refresh" on an older unit? I have the original in my 60. It looks great but I suspect it's starting to get gunked up inside.

Only if your unit has metal tanks as they consider the units with plastic tanks disposable and won't deal with them. At least that was my experience couple of years back.

I have been unsuccessful in finding anyone to work on radiators. The shops in town seem to only sell replacements, not work on them.
A friend that worked a south valley shop years ago said that shop closed because the city or county required so much hazmat compliance it put them out of business.
I don't know if that still the case or what, but its nuts no one does it.
I can't imagine the commercial vehicle and heavy equipment sectors don't have demand for service... maybe there's a place in Los Lunas or estancia?
If you find someone please let us all know.

Got this orange thing running today, shot rat s*** out the exhaust and smoked like crazy but we are off to a good start.

The float was stuck and a little corroded but easy fix, even had the carb rebuild kit in the trunk for me to rob the gasket from!

Running it off a gas can currently because the tank is disgusting, not sure what the magic concoction for cleaning out bad fuel gunk is but I’m open to suggestions.

Also have to figure out why the cap on the brake master won’t come off and probably fix something in the brakes because the pedal just goes to the floor

Nice old pony. Autozone says to use a mild soap and water. Makes sense - it's not harsh on the tank and takes oil away with it. I was pleasantly surprised by this article.

Yup. Dawn dish soap and hot water. Then put a couple pounds of nuts and bolts in it and tie it to the front of a cement mixer and let it tumble for an hour or so. Yes, I have done this a few times and it works great.

If your brake proportioning valve is working well you can get 200k miles on the factory shoes

Ya, I would want the Gen3 rear brakes because they are easier to work on. Plus, I seem to recall they are a bit larger.

I pulled the CV for the first time. What a pain in the ass. The little fork tool isn't ideal but I was tired of beating on the other end with a hammer and pry bar. I've been going at this without the fork for 2 evenings.

I'm using OEM reboot kits because these have been torn for quite a while. But I've checked them for play and they seem to be alright. I just need them to last another year or so. CVJ is out of budget right now.

Oh, sure. The next time I'll probably go with the CVJ and upgraded/longer inner boot that Juan told me about 2 years ago when he was pulling his out in the middle of Rio Puerco. For now I'm doing a boot stretch mod on the inner so that the boot ribs will not rub together and cause friction.

Definitely lifted
