What did you do with your truck this week?

If it has the towing package then it should be the same setup as my Taco. I have a tranny temp warning light that comes on if it overheats. My cooler does a GREAT job keeping the tranny cool. If you have a cooler I don't see how you burnt the fluid up. I have towed my 40, over 5000#, up and down the mountains in 4th gear going 65 for 45-60 minutes straight and never had the tranny light come on. My engine got warm, but the tranny stayed cool. For what it's worth.:meh: I'll be rooting for ya'.

abusing the skinny pedal isn't really what hurts the transmission off road.

It's the speeds that barely hit off idle rpms for hours at a time and it causes the transmission to overheat due to lack of air on avaliable cooling surfaces.

the additional cooler adds much more cooling surface for the fan to pull air thru.

Steve maybe look into getting a fan cooled trans cooler. That way when your using high rpm but low speed offroad the fan will continue to cool the fluid. Just a thought. Also do people recommend a gear change with your size tires? That might also give the trans a little help. One thing I learned a long time ago was never tow anything in od. It just kills a transmission.

Just a though.

Would be interesting to add some sort of tranny temp gauge. That way you know your getting hot.

I think a "lifetime sealed tranny" is a misnomer if you are using it outside of the specs intended for a "lifetime sealed tranny." If there is a method to service the transmission there is a reason to service it. Heavily built trucks with 92,000 miles on original fluid sounds like the issue.

If you had serviced that at 50,000 miles you probably wouldn't have the problem, that's all I am sayin!

The FJC's "tow package" only included the wiring harness for a trailer and the OEM hitch. I don't think TMC offered this option, but instead it was a dealer added option (SET). To my knowledge there is not a separate OEM tranny cooler option available. Tranny fluid coolant lines just run into the lower portion of the radiator. The AT is just like Steve said, a sealed/maintenance free unit. TMC does not recommend flushing the transmission and it is not on the maintenance/service schedule. I know several people have flushed their's and done it the passive way - disconnect coolant lines from the radiator and flush old fluid while pumping new fluid into the AT. Keep running it a few minutes at a time until the outflow looks new.

I drive pretty hard in daily use and off road and I have never had a symptom of a bad AT. And I keep about 200lbs of gear in the back of my truck, on top of all the extra steel I'm carrying. I'm not sure what people are doing differently than me that is killing these AT's.

I have stock gears and need to upgrade to 4.56's but that is going to have to wait until later this year. I have to decide how large my tires are going to get. If I stay around 33's I'll go 4.56 but if I go SAC or 2" extended travel front and 35's then I'll go 4.88's.

finally finished pulling case. Sprayed it down at the carwash but still needs some elbow greese.

IMHO:
Not a tranny expert but I would pull the pan if it can be done. Clean, clean filter, and get all that old fluid OUT. See if you can drill a drain plug in the pan and drain everytime you change oil. Also look up BG product to put back in it. BG makes great fuel additive also. But you need to get all that old fluid OUT. Lots of flushes don't get much of the old out. Some times it's a bandaid on a broke leg.

Gabe get some wd40 and spray all the gears and inside surfaces. Don't let anything rust. Your definitely going to need some help. Since the case is now apart the only way to get those stake nuts off is with an impact gun.

IndianDoc I'll give you a hand man. I'm just down the road about 20 min.

Well I was just joking , about needing the help, actually being under the thing after it nearly fell was the point, but I will have it back up on the lift Saturday afternoon if you want to swing by and turn a wrench or just hang. PM me if you need my number :Doc I also plan of fitting the Tuffy console and putting in the new IPA headlights and wiring harness this weekend too. So lots to do, Also have got to get pic's of the sliders reinstalled and some shots for Troolhole of the dizzy:bounce:.

Found another one.........

I figured I still had a couple days left on my U-haul rental after the trip to Wyoming, why not bring home as many cruisers as possible :grinpimp:

Aw man I want those bug catchers.

You sir have a problem. But hey at least it isn't Johnny Walker and strippers you're hooked on. Just make sure when you have kids that you keep the whole family up to date on tetanus shots.
