What I need to do is start charging Woody for all the click revenue :)

I'm getting ready to dig in to my front brakes today. I'm experiencing a little squealing noise when I start going from stopped. Only when I start going, not stopping. My pads are 60,000+ old. Everything else is original from 1992. Do I need to replace anything else besides the pads? I've never replaced the brake pads by myself before and am probably a 2-3  mechanic. However, I think I can handle most anything with the proper guidance. Today I'm just digging in to look so I can order whatever I need and have it for this weekend. What should I be looking for? Thanks.

I've heard of people going to 100 series pads. Can I do this without modifying my 15" wheels? Or should I just stick with stock OEM pads. I've never had an issue with stopping before but if I can upgrade without modifying to get better stopping then I would.

1992 FJ80 234k miles. 15" wheels. Pretty much bone stock.

To do the front pads with 60K on them, I would recommend doing rotors as well. In order to do the rotors, basically you are into a front end rebuild kit because you have to pull the front hubs to get the front rotors off (AFAIK...I'm experienced with a 96...) Then you may be looking at wheel bearings, seals, etc. and if you're THAT far, you may as well go a LITTLE farther and open the knuckles and do the birf's and maybe the trunnions. Everything short of pulling the diff and changing the bearings and seals in it.

I put 100 series pads in mine, but again, it's a 96 with the larger brakes.Whatever you're doing, 60K on FRONT pads is incredible on one of these trucks. You must drive slowly and use the engine to brake. Not a lot of city driving....

Good Luck!!

I baby my 80. I have always been easy on brakes. I also am easy on tires. Call me frugal like that. I rebuilt the knuckles, wheel bearings, etc about 6 years ago. And don't really have the funds to do anything that isn't "necessary" at the moment. (I just found out my job with the school district isn't being funded next year so I'm about 4 weeks from being unemployed and frantically looking for a new job!) So I will probably just do the brakes, turn the rotors and repack the wheel bearings with moly. (Unless the wheel bearings look bad...)

My understanding is that 100 series pads will fit but you have to grinding out the 15" wheels a little bit. I'll probably just go with 80 series pads for now...

I would set LA aside from California. LA is the worst place I have been. The rest of the state is pretty sweet from the time I have spent there. I try not to get to caught up on politics. If I had to give up my arsenal in trade for playing around on public land 24/7 I would be the first person dumping my guns on the government lawn.
As for Texas I wouldn't live anywhere else except the Austin area. And If I didn't have handed down family land I would probably think of moving elsewhere.

Ha. That made me laugh...if LA is not indicative of California, Austin is definitely not indicative of Texas.

I'll bow out of this debate because there is clearly no finish-line. Texas is horrible and California is the best!! Everybody please move to Cali and sell me your private land in Texas on your way out.

Thanks.

I think what you've been doing has worked well for a lot of years!

Don't use moly on the wheel bearings. It's coefficient of slip is too low and the bearings tend to slide before they roll, then they get hot and start to fail. I use Lucas Red-N-Tacky #2 in my wheel bearings. Available at Wal Mart or O'Reilly or Napa. If I pull it apart, I put in new seals. Should be able to just clean and repack the WB. May want to get a new start washer for securing the lock nuts.

What is your expertise for employment? I have some relatives in that area that may be able to help if in the right field. (Not farmers' field...)

2nd. At the very least get new washers.

Also, I like to see this. Complete strangers reaching out to lend a hand. This is why I love forums like this.

Yes. Not moly in the wheel bearings. Good call. I used Lucas Red-N-Tacky #2 in them when I did them 6 years ago. I will order new seals and start washers.

I was a commercial roof consultant for 12 years (selling commercial roofing). Owned a commercial roofing company with two partners (former best friends). Have spent the last year as a student advocate with the school district. Love the kids and the job. It's unfortunate but it didn't pay very well either. I'm looking for something in outside sales, preferably in the construction industry/rental equipment/project management. If you have any connections I would greatly appreciate it. I can send you my resume. I'll PM you. THANKS!

I bring my baseball team down to KC every year in October for a baseball tournament in Mid October. We always stay in the Shawnee/Olathe area. I'll have to look you up when we come down this fall.

Yes, I will order new washers and seals. Thanks.

And MUD is the greatest. The best fraternity in the world.

Not the weekend, but had to fix a loose shock absorber and played with the front and rear lockers so I can keep them "fresh".
I found an area by the railroad tracks unpaved, just rocks and turned the lockers on and off a few times.
I tried it last week and the lights were blinking. Today only the front was blinking more than the rear but after a few feet it got to be solid. Turning it off again a bit a problem, the light would go out and unlock when shifted to D from N.

Installed Wits' End console organizer, TEQ and Wits' End stickers, and console carpet mats.

Looks really good there especially with the really nice seat covers. :grinpimp:

You didn't have an ARB front bumper to place it on? If you don't follow it's intended use then there is no warranty :flipoff2:

That's some coveted real estate...it looks like Wits' End is kicking Texas' ass :flipoff2: HAHAHHAHAHAHHHAHAH!!

Hmm, when you spread it out like that its almost too much logo :hhmm:
