Is it "normal" for my lights to dim a little and heater blower to slow down a little at idle as compared to while driving?

Normal, yes, to a point. With the low RPMs at idle, the alternator isn't spinning very fast, therefore it doesn't put out the juice it does at driving RPMs. It can also mean the alternator is getting weak. You can have most parts stores test it on the vehicle for free.

Ok. That's what I thought (about the alt getting weak). That makes sense. I've noticed it before but tonight it seemed more obvious. It could be that it's blizzarding here so I'm more sensitive to the lower light at idle.

Solution? Flip on the spot lights and have tons of light! Nobody is on the road anyway!

I'll swing in to AutoZone and have them check the alternator. It's OEM and I replaced it about 5 years ago when I replaced my radiator. Silly me gave away the old alternator (it was original) rather than keep it for a spare. Sigh.

Unless you have @Photoman alt kit and smaller pulley which brings up the RPM on the alt for long idle situations.

I'll have to check that out. Any adverse affects to doing this?

What did I do with my 80? Well I took a break from shoveling the darn snow long enough to take a picture,

Finished this a couple weeks ago.

Installed some projectors in my Depo headlights.

tractorpole I have a 1997 lx450 and my lights just seem dim . they are working fine with nothing wrong with the glass ,they are just not bright at all. Whats the best thing I can do to make them brighter .Is there a after market complete replacement or should I just try a better bulb .The bulbs that are in there are whats recommended by the parts stores.

Got rear ended by my son's friend in a ------ jeep ------- at the bottom of a snow packed hill. Upper & lower hatches are destroyed plus one broken Depo tail light and a dent in the passenger side corner. It's fixable but insurance company will 'total' it so I think I'm on my own. Does anybody have hatches they'd like to part with?

Took a 400 mile trip to Knoxville and back. First long trip in the 80, loved it. However, we had our first experience with how SH*TTY the stock lights are at low beam. We hit a massive downpour at night and I flat out couldn't see without the high beams. Finally said screw it and left them on most likely blinding anyone in our path.

I need to remedy this immediately. Saw where slee has the wiring harness. Love the clear headlights I see ppl with in here...."Depos" ??

The best thing, from what I hear, is to go the Depos route. I haven't done that yet because of the cost but did the HIR/John Deere bulb replacement and am incredibly impressed. Quite a big difference for me. Cost about $45 for new bulbs and I can see at night.

My issue (as outlined above) is related to my alternator not the bulbs.

I know there are a few guys on here that have done both so maybe they can chime in.

The Depo headlights H4 and H1 bulbs were much better than the stock 9005 and 9006 bulbs, this was the first mod I did to my 80 when I bought it.

the projectors and HID's I had taking up space on my work bench in the garage.

others can chime in about alternate bulbs to the stock ones.

None that any of us who have already done the 150A alt mod have seen.

Can you tell me a little more about this mod? Is it an actual modification to the OEM alternator or just installing a different alt that's rated at 150 amps?
