What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend? (31 Viewers)

My weekend started early again.

Picked up a boat battery for my 2nd battery install on sale at sears last night. Group 29HM - 200 minutes of standby and supposedly fits where a 31M fits. The kid at the counter swore that the position of the terminals was the only difference.

I finally installed the aftermarket windshield washer nozzles on the hood, do not understand why i waited for summer. Took 10 minutes and was way easy.

I did the physical install of a 2nd washer reservoir for the rear washer. Because to heck with the diverter valve. It's a bag from a late 80's 4runner. If my understanding of the wiring diagram in the FSM is correct, I just need to connect it to the leads for the diverter valve and remove a diode from behind the dash. Will tackle when i install the CDL switch and some more stereo equipment.

Started to install mil-spec battery terminals and realized that the rings on the fusible links don't fit over the bolt on the terminal. Will revisit when i have a new set of fusible links - I'll build a jig and use a drill press to slightly enlarge all of the rings, so that the old set will be a worthwhile set of spares.

Did a slightly better job of using the lousy "help" brand GM style hood liner retainers to retain my lousy hood liner.

Installed a waterproof float charger in the starter battery box with the power cord dangling below the left turn signal. Sometimes i go a month without driving the rig and there is some mild battery drain, so this is a Good Thing.

Installed an old set of round aluminum yakima load bars i bought for $25, in preparation for finding a good roof basket for cheap. Silly things are anodized gold but whatcha gonna do, they cost me $25 and a drive to one of the most remote mcmansions in the salt lake valley. technically in the valley anyway.

Talked to the fabricator who made my new bumper about seat brackets. He's already finished the front brackets, says he'll have the rear brackets done tomorrow. I am way psyched. It's awesome to know a motivated fabricator.

He's prototyping weld-on rock sliders for his own fzj80 right now. Will probably buy a set and have him install them. Looking forward to seeing what he can do in a tubular rear bumper.

No no no no no!!!

You can't leave us hanging like that. I had better see a massive update to that thread ;)

I should have said "I got my factory installed RHD retractable mirrors working". Sorry to get your hopes up haha.

Just test fitted a few things ...

really need to think about sorting my suspension out as the tyres are catching when flexing

I saved up $20 to buy less than 5 gallons of gas at 4.39 in Minneapolis. The highest gas prices in the country!! hee haw!!!!
so my weekend so far has been just sitting in the LC and listening to the radio or watching the start of the outdoor motocross season on my Nexus 7 tablet.

Subtle lol. You really should find a junk ski carrier box for the roof rack and cut the bottom out and mount the horns inside.

That way you get to cackle doubly when you watch someone soil themselves at the initial blast, then the confusion as they try vainly to figure out where it came from ;D

If you go really fast and slam the breaks on, this will happen. (wish it was that easy)

Someday it will get rebuild, have another one in the garage that is getting ready to go in...

So what now? Flareless?

Pat

Dunno. I'm thinking about it but I'm in the "I like the flare look" camp. Also thinking about some kind of custom sheet metal sliders with liner on the whole rig (desert sand is my current favorite).

And oh yeah - I like how the flares actually work for mud...

Time will tell :). But now I have a big souvenir from GSMTR. I guess that means I get something seeing how I've struck out twice in a row on the raffle.

Well, I found a nice easy trail and let my 10 yr old daughter steer while sitting on my lap. She says she wants a Suzuki Samurai when she gets to driving age so she can go off-road with me...cool.

Anyway, a few poser shots from a nice day out in the woods.

Nice cruiser. Couple questions about your rig.....Why is there a coil spring on the steering damper? Also did you build the rear bumper wings? They look good.
