What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend? (101 Viewers)

The windows on my rig seemed to work great when I got it back in July. But I have noticed they were not so good in the cold (20f) when I was elk hunting. They were slow and would get stuck or almost stop at about 80% up. I read that if they are only slow in the cold than new window runs are in order. Today, I pulled my passenger door apart and replaced the runs. I also removed the window motor and regulator. I cleaned all the grime and old grease out of the regulator tracks and re-greased it all.

I acontinued to remove the motor and opened it up because I found a thread detailing how to clean and service the electric motor. Once I got the motor open I was very surprised to see it looked super clean(the joys of a low mileage rig). I just went ahead and added a little bit of fresh petroleum jelly to the gear in the motor and put it back together. The regulator was much easier to move by hand after the cleaning and new grease. I also fixed the old vapor barrier while I was in there.

Sadly the window didn't seem any faster than before. I timed it going up at 8 seconds before I started and after all that work it still takes 8 seconds. But I guess 8 seconds is good enough if the window doesn't get stuck when it is cold. I will have to wait and see if it is any better next time I get out hunting or maybe Ice fishing if I am lucky.

New motors are needed.

FInally made it back to my 2nd home in Costa Rica. First time since beginning of COVID. Luckily my 93 HDJ "El Burro del Pantano" was in good hands in covered storage and exercised for me. He was handed over at the airport all shined up and ready to rock.

Having some good Land Bruiser adventures.

Some time at Playa Hermosa.

Started raining so we retreated to hanging out in the cargo bay. Nice room with a view for reading/snacking.

Later went exploring up in the mountains and tried to run down some jungle turkeys for Thanksgiving dinner.

Way they hell out where only ATVs normally go we found a great waterfall. Unfortunately it is often cloudy this time of year up in the mountains. See waterfall in top of pic.

Kept exploring uncharted roads and trails using only Google sat maps to see where we were or may be heading. Tried to work my way back down to a known road and many hours deep in the adventure we came across this bridge. I was not even sure if we would fit through the concrete tower.

Took a long hard look at the bridge. An HDJ80 is not a lightweight....

Decided to try the ford next to the bridge instead but being the rainy season there was deep, fast moving water and an entire tree blocking the ford.

In the end we went for it and with a major pucker factor we endured the creaking and swaying and made it over the bridge.

Later found a cool new "secret" beach that is only accessible via a gnarly muddy track that anythign less than a stock 4runner may have difficulty with. The reward was an awesome driftwood beach. This place is going to be one of my new "go to" beach spots for the family. Nice place to do some social distancing.

Finishing up the hitch relocation. Welded the stock bumper cover and cut holes for the hitch and tow connector.

Next step is making wings and a swingout.

New motors are needed.

How fast do your windows roll up? Should I be expecting faster than 8 or 9 seconds?

Nope, my old 91 still had the original motors and they worked fine with 280,000. This rig is a 97 with 120,000. These motors are much cleaner compared to the old 91.

I was lucky enough to get out and call some coyotes today and I was also able to test them in some 20F conditions this morning.

Yesterday at 50F in the garage the drivers took 9 seconds to go up and the refreshed passenger took 8 seconds.

This morning in the snow and cold the drivers got stuck and wouldn't make it up without physical assistance but the passenger went up in 9 seconds.

That is a great improvement over a stuck window in my book. Now the drivers window is next.

After new motor, 3.5 sec dry, just checked. Before, I would grab the window to assist if any moisture was present at all.

I replaced the runs earlier this year and it helped some, but the windows still get stuck in the cold or wet. I suppose motor replacement is in my future.

Damn, alright than, maybe I do need new motors lol

Front brake caliber bolt fell out. Will be getting a new one and checking the others on the new calibers I put on about 3 months ago. Doh.

I went down the road of replacing the runs, no improvement. I feel like it is the felt pieces that run horizontal. They are really stiff and brittle, so that's my next step.

This weekend I bought an 80... 1995 Moonglow pearl. Looking forward to building it up. Completely stock but added OME lift and KO2 to start.

If I wasn't on an extreme budget I would have just gone ahead and replaced the motor and regulator with a doorman unit. I think the problem is really related to the regulator track mechanism. I was able to clean and grease the tracks on mine really well but the little wheels did not want to turn and I couldn't get any improvement from the wheels by cleaning and lubing.

How much carbon did you clean out of the window switches?

None, I didn't mess with the switches. I had bypassed the switch with a power probe and I saw no difference in window performance.

Damn, that looks like fun ! Going to be in CR in less than 3 weeks and your photos make me even more excited to visit again. Gonna have to figure how to get the rental car to places like that.....without anyone knowing...
