Great thanks for the info a few items are off the list as I had just taken care of em, that's how I found out I needed a hg.

Make sure you use new OEM head gasket. Change your thermostat including the oring seal.

Have the machine shop review the rest of the valves, valve stem seals.
New tappet cover seal.
Clean throttle body while you at it. Replace fuel filter. New exhaust and inlet manifold seal.
Check timing chain, timing chain guides and tensioner.
Replace dizzy Oring seal.
Spark plugs, spark plug tube seals.
PCV seals and hoses
Replace all silicone tubes
PHH
Perhaps EGR delete while you there and see condition of wiring.

Have your injectors serviced.

That would be my list.

On my way to Moab with a couple buddies

Packed up the 80 and headed out for a 6 week shutdown. Engine ran hot the whole way out, had to back the fuel off do 90kph on the highway and crawl up a steep range at 30kph!
Found my dump pipe had come loose off the back of the turbo, I'm guessing this was spewing hot exhaust gas back into the engine bay causing everything in there to heat up.

When I pulled in at a dealer on the way this was sitting on display in the showroom, apparently my 80 isn't an equal trade for it lol.

Let's see:
-Drank beer
-Thought about doing some work, and drank another beer
-Felt good enough to start doing some work, grabbed a cold beer

-Hooked up 3/4 wrench with a 30 mm socket to crank bolt and loosened it with a bump start. I positioned the wrench against the steering stabilizer bracket, as the lower tranny fluid line kept me from putting it against the frame (no pic of this, sorry)

-Took lots of pictures as I was working so if I forgot, or had too many beers, I could reference what it originally looked like

-Pulled out the fan, fan shroud, belts

-Pulled the Battery and box

-I think I drank another beer while doing this, as it was the last time all weekend that I was relaxed

-Pulled valve cover

Doesn't look too bad for 284k, does it?

Pulled the throttle body, upper plenum, tried to paint vc and am still battling with the aluminum not wanting to take paint in a few spots. Proceeded to clean plenum (which wasn't too bad compared to some pics I have seen on here) and VC. Forgot, removed plug seals with a screwdriver and a twist from a pair of pliers.

I'll put up a build thread, but here is what it looked like when I left it at my brothers, ready for reassembly when time allows this coming weekend. Still have to replace all the vacuum lines, tighten the #1 bypass hose (had a coolant leak, found this hose with the clamp on the block so loose I could pull it off with little effort), front and rear brakes, finish removing the rear heater and lines that are rusted through.

I ended up using a pipe to bend the mounting tabs on the bumper, all it needed was about a 15 degrees bend upward.

How much is a head job going for?
What exactly do I need to ask a shop for?
I heard about the valve seals, do you buy those from @cDan or @beno and bring them to shop?
I just picked up this head to get the process going.
Thx

As far as just getting the head machined I couldn't tell you, the shop did everything from replacing the hoses to machining the head. I think the total job was a little over 2K. Looks like te other users covered everything that needs to be done. I let the shop order the parts from Toyota, just makes for better business

Thanks,
I just dropped off the head to the shop this morning and just ordered tons of parts from @beno
I can't afford to let the shop order for me they will overcharge on everything they get.

Drug home some equipment to excavate a driveway expansion for a more space to park so we don't have to move one every time to use another one; or perhaps just to have room in case I stumble upon one more
