Return trip from Louisiana through Mississippi and stopped at Tilda Bogue. Gas pump was out of order. @wngrog needs to put a Dollar General plastic bag over the handle to indicate the pump ain't workin'.

Nice weather finally so cleared the garage to do some small stuff on the 62

My driver side power mirror wiring manages to get caught on window and get jammed up into the front lower corner of window frame. So took panel off and tried to rope it into that holder for it on inside of door cavity. Seems to last a year before it gets caught again.
While open I installed the new shiny OEM door handle. 3 more of those to go!

Also swapped in new OEM rear taillight lenses. While opened up I fixed replaced the red LED blinkers the stupid current owner installed for amber as they should be. Did the fronts too.

Also picked back up on my mudflap refurb. Prior to today and removed excess rubber, wire wheels the metal, and sprayed with rust inhibitor. Today I got the mounting channels with epoxy. Once cured will sand a bit and hit with Flex Seal spray.

Fixed the small rust issue in the middle flange

Whew

Must be nice not having it look Millennium Falcon going into warp due to a million tiny rock chips.
Chipped, cracked yeah, it was baddd!
Old one:

It started with a simple carb swap. It worked great until it got to temperature and then I found the 3rd leak in the exhaust manifold; The manifold gasket was done.
What started as a simple carb swap has become a full 3fe manifolds swap plus since I'm in there, rebuilt bz smog pump, power steering pump. New isolator, used new to me air rail and a bunch of other parts.
Wash, use degreaser, wash again. I had about 1-1/2" of grease under the smog pump.

While everything is apart I decided to get a few measurements for if and when the carb will go. Not sure yet when they will be but I've been hoarding fj60 parts, O.e and after.
I was going through my stash and can't believe how many parts I have just for the 60 alone.
I stumbled upon my offenhauser intake and took a quick measurement. There is still some room from the master cylinder.
Since everything is out I'm going to mock up a few things before I reinstall everything.
Not something I will be doing at this moment but it gives me time to purchase, fab and when I'm ready install. I hate being without my 60 for a long time. Until the carb issue went, I was doing daily driving in it.
Plan is to weld Injector bungs, add efi but not go the sniper route although that definitely be more economical.

Investigating an easy relay conversion for the rear lift gate power lock (both my OEM relays finally went TU so I'm going to try to find a way to use easily available Tyco/Bosch or just parts store relays), working on a bracket template so I can easily mount a legitimate PCV catch can instead of my jerry rigged hardware store air/oil separator, and popping in the Cruiser Cult license plate lens gaskets.

In summary, not nearly enough! :bang:

Made some progress on fixing an exhaust leak at the manifold.... the new one is making a funny whistling noise now though. :hmm:

Still need to build a down pipe and connect it to the rest of the exhaust and replace the EGT/boost gauge I got that was dead on arrival, but it was complete enough to take for a spin around the block and listen to the turbo spool up.

It’s been completely dry around here all summer until the day I decided to strip paint and convert rust. Of course it immediately began raining after I got everything stripped and de-rusted. So I took an other day to clean the rust. And it immediately rained again. And again I scrubbed the rust.

Finally after two weeks of fighting weather I got some primer on the firewall. If all goes to plan I’ll get the fenders and the rest of the front clip ready by next weekend.

I'll put this here, too. I took the 60 on a small road trip this weekend and my brother-in-laws rode with me in, neither of which are "car people".

One of them made the comment that it seemed like I was moving the steering wheel 45* before anything would happen. So of course, I started paying attention and noticing it too. Driving it every day for the past ~6 years, I guess I've just gotten used to the gradual increase in steering play.

Yesterday, I greased all of the steering joints, tightened the relay rod end and made a small adjustment on the steering box adjustment screw and what a difference, the truck drives like it's 1983 again!

You've got to love quick easy fixes with massive improvement! And not having to buy anything to achieve it!

@Ian Crawford can you elaborate more (or what procedure you followed) on the adjustment you made to the steering box adjustment screw. I have a little play in my steering as well. I know I need to rebuild my steering gear box but trying to buy a little time before I pull the trigger on a rebuild. Thanks!

Sure, I followed the FSM procedure here:

Go ahead and check the relay rod end first. Once slack was out of the relay rod end I went to the steering gear box adjuster. I turned it clockwise about 3/4 turn in ~1/8 turn increments. It felt pretty good so I did not go any further.

I'm told it gets tight at the ends of steering travel if you go too far and you'd want to back it off.

Lemme know once you figure that out! I gotta do the same to mine 👍🏾

@Ian Crawford thanks so much man, that helps a ton! I’m gonna follow this procedure. Mine isn’t that bad but I believe it’s slightly out of the accepted “free play” range. Thanks again

You referring to the relays?

It should be pretty straightforward, so I'll definitely post up how to do it once I get it done and verify it works.
