Picked up a used old-style ARB front bumper with what appears to be the brackets and hardware intact. Now I need to get those pesky rivets out…
Was that the one I saw for sale on Portland Craigslist?

While I was replacing the belts I decided to tackle the long overdue (and dreaded) side plate gasket. I’ll do a separate write up on lessons learned. Thinking of calling it Cruel Psychological Experiment.
Not a job I’ll look back on with undiluted pleasure but it’s done.

Here is the write up:

Removed the license plate light trim, cleaned up a couple of rusty spots and coated them in rust converter and a few coats of primer. The rust was worse than I thought so I will have to replace some of the steel at some point in the future, but this should at least stop the rust from spreading any further. I also straightened out the flange that the rear hatch/tailgate weatherstripping sits on and gave it a coat of rust converter and primer; still need to get a bit of seam sealer for the remaining gap in the panels.

Over Thanksgiving I had a little time to finally wrap up my dual battery system. Made all my own cables and did all the electrical work. Low voltage and heavier gauge battery cables. Also found a used OE battery tray and modified it a bit. Welded on the bracket to relocate the coolant overflow and tapped in some new holes with screw inserts to mount the brackets and also to mount my Blue Sea Relay and my 200A fuses. Carefully fine tooled out for the manual switch in cab but as you can see I scratched around the hole a bit. Battle wounds I call them. All in all spent quite a few days over the course of a couple weeks with the little free time I have building this. But then had to paint around the house on the weekend and spend time with our 4 month year old. Good times! :coffee::clap: Eventually I want to put in an inverter and some other accessories to feed off the deep cycle.

The disc brakes in the rear are going to be a great upgrade with the Cummins 4BT. The FJ80 didn’t have a factory locker but did get a Harrop Eaton for the front axle. The rear will be next on my list when I can afford it. The front is all torn down which is why I put one in the front axle first.

Looks great Justin. The X2 was an excellent choice. Your son Willie is going to enjoy that in due time.

Bought a gasket from McMaster and put it on the tailgate. The 60s didn’t have this gasket but the one I got fits perfectly and no rattling once it’s closed. Got the idea from Kevin at wagon gear. I also put together a tool book for the cruiser. My old biz partner and I used to make these tool books. Bombproof and tested thru and thru!
