I've replaced pinion seals with no ill effects, too. Nothing should change when just replacing the seal, shims stay the same, etc. I guess if you have crush sleeve in there you could over tighten it and crush it some more.

Check backlash and note before you remove the pinion nut, if it's within spec and you have the solid sleeve "not crush sleeve" replace the pinion seal and re-toque the nut, confirm backlash stayed the same and drive on. If backlash changed you did something wrong as others have noted.
IMHO, in the picture OL Yeller posted it looks to me like it's leaking at the yoke splines more than a seal.

Is it normal for oil on a 3rd to seep past the splines like on the t-case? If so, I’ve never noticed 🤷‍♂️

The one piece cases have one seal back there. The drum for the parking brake gets grooved and the speedi sleeves rarely work.

Algazy and Mudrak will mod the speedo housing with a second seal that will cure that issue forever

How redneck would it be to just “re-seal” the driveshaft to that flange (maybe a bit of ultra black) and call it good, my dad kinda thought I had enough going on to worry about something that wasn’t leaking before I opened it....

That’d be purdy redneck’ed... I have used the grey diff oil rtv on those splines- both tcase and pinion. Per Georg. I will never ask why; just tell him yes sir, thank you sir.

BUt... if it leaks past those splines and nothing else is off, verify the vent is clear...

Right, I’m moving to my front 62 housing so will ensure it’s vented.

I made it yank the full sized wheel chair lift van up into the tire shop driveway out of the road and save its rear doors from the would be asshat in the tacoma that was going to be so kind as to push them up the drive via the as of yet unmarred rear doors. then made it watch as I bought a 17 year old subaru with an automatic and an AC, and proceded to try to find a nice pasture for some much needed grazing time... aka/ SUMMER

FOR SALE!

@Ol Yeller ... I’m in need of a younger more resourced individual who is able and driven to take it to the finish line... all offers will be entertained; not all will be accepted... classified ad to follow... sorry @bobm and @Glennmerkel

Sad to see it go :frown:
