Took my 105 to the local Cars and Coffee car show this morning, where there's always a good showing of Land Cruisers.

I ran into a guy who was over in Afghanistan awhile back, and they had an HZJ105 they used, which was armored (windows and doors). He was in a U.S. unit co-assigned with a British unit. He said they beat the hell out of it, and abused it, but it kept running and never failed them. I asked him if he knew the story behind the 105, and unfortunately he didn't, other than the Brits brought it over, and it was LHD, so I assume it may have been assigned to a British unit previously in another NATO country who had it before, or could have been pulled from NATO stock for previous peacekeeping missions in Kosovo, where the Danish Army also had some 105's there.

After looking at mine, which is a GX trim level, we ascertained the 105 they had in Afghanistan was a G trim level, as the seats were vinyl, and it had crank up windows (which didn't work because of the armored glass).

New wheels to replace the crusty 25-year old ones on my 105 showed up yesterday.

It'll be some time before I figure out what tires and sizes I want to go with. Still on the fence whether I leave the suspension stock, or go with a mild lift.

Ok. Now I have yet another unobtainum goal for retirement. An armoured 105. Makes my ex Abu Dhabi Farmers Bureau 105 look rather anemic.

Thanks for sharing! Slee Off Road informed me yesterday that my ARB bumper for the 105 is in. Looking forward to getting it installed.

Swapped the drivers window motor out in the 1995 HDJ80 with a spare North American FZJ80 motor.
Interesting to find that the wiring is backwards...down is up, with the auto feature, and up is down.
It shall stay like this for TTB.

Ate my wheaties and tackled a big one. New exhaust manifold(with EGT probe tapped in the middle) nice new studs/hardware, Munro turbo, new oil feed/drain/coolant lines, pretty much all of it along with gaskets everywhere.

The oil feed line is very hard to get situated and I fought with it for about half an hour. That bottom all the way in the back exhaust manifold bolt is tough to get also, but I found a way in to get it torqued. I’ll be able to fire it tomorrow morning and want to make sure I don’t have any leaks before buttoning it all up and taking it for a good drive to see the difference and what consider what needs adjusting

Oil change, coolant drain, rear heater delete, AC system upgrade, new rubber hoses here and there, new thermostat, tire rotation.

New AC system items, really glad to delete the rear heater, the rubber hoses were hard as a rock and the hard lines were a bit rusted. Removal of rear heater core and remove and replace evaporator tomorrow.

1hdt, and just the factory 2 piece log manifold. Nice new studs and all that jazz. Seems to be running pretty good, it’s crazy how much quieter these motors are when it’s all sealed up properly

Were you able to get the hardlines for the rear heater out without cutting them or destroying them?

I drilled a hole in my manifold and made threads to insert an EGT probe. (1HD-FTE)

No, they were thoroughly destroyed in the process. I had to cut both hard lines twice to get them out.

The large 4 port section I got through partsouq, the second section through IMPEX. Some of the parts sites seem to have the stuff that one or two others don’t, almost like supermarkets haha

ok, that’s what I thought. For the small section, did you get all of the gaskets/seals through one or the other as well? I shop at multiple supermarkets sometimes, you need what you need! Haha.

Had no issues with the factory intake pipe, but took a stab at making a much bigger intake from air box to turbo inlet. I have a snorkel installed now as well as I high flowed turbo, and I know it doesn’t make sense unless the air box goes bigger as well, but I wanted to see if there was any noticeable change.

Found a 1FZ lid in good shape, had to do more cutting than I thought I would, cut down some big pipe sections, but got it just right. Went with 3.5” silicone from the airbox, reducer down to 2.5/2.75” onto the turbo inlet and felt a noticeable difference. All you have to do is extended the threaded rod inside the airbox with a coupler and stud as the 1fz lid is very tall. Boost comes on much earlier, and there’s no lack of air going in. Haven’t really gotten on it hard enough to see if it’s reduced egt’s at all, but it feels like it has more pep, at least the butt-dyno says so

Parsouq had all the rubber o-rings, the two manifold rings, and the collar that goes inside, and I just ordered them all on one go to be safe
