Thanks, that is not a bad idea at all! My thought on putting the motor into another shell was to save my son $$$ as he is in college. But... if the "engine issues" this other one has are minor things then I will fix it up and we will have a spare engine. The challenge would then be to find a donor westfalia for a reasonable amount. It seems for the most part like they have gone cult status like a land cruiser and demand premium dollars.
We're still poking around in the stock 2.0 in our '78. Sometimes I wish for more power, sometimes the slow lane is where its at, lol.

Sorry for the issues. Great your kid is ok. Have you thought about putting that TDI into a Westfalia for you and your wife and having some fun? VW for short weekends, and your big rig for long runs?

Sometimes as parents, we can at least dream

This! 95-99 eurovans this bolts in. You can pick them up for cheap with bad transmissions. They are much more comfy and safer than a vanagon or older but not as cool.
So you could have a manual bolt in tdi with factory wire harness. Those 2 upgrades make them much less unreliableish. 😂

Eurovans are pretty sweet

Unreliableish - Is that what "fahrvergnugen" translates too?

Our HZJ-73 got a lot of mechanical baselining last winter, but we passed on a new radiator because I needed it home to get going on bodywork/paint and didn't have time to source one. Soon after, I picked up a new one for a 79 series from Odd Iron Offroad (had been sitting around for some time, but new, and priced great) for when the time came to swap out. That time came as soon as I got the truck home back in March- nice leak along the bottom. I got it into the shop today and we are almost done switching it out. Direct fit for my '98.

Ok, sorry for cultural appropriation of VW German engineers, no harm was meant to any fine German members here on ih8mud. I love brawtwurst and once we had a German exchange student so I believe I have a pass?

Rig is with @orangefj45 for final inspection and approval. I think Georg liked it and I'm not getting it back...😂

Interior work. Started fitting the parts in the Galley. Built in fridge and the sink with a folding faucet. I'll remove all the hardware from the fridge and attach a corian countertop on the top with hinges and latches outside, so you lift the countertop to access the fridge. Leave opening in the cabinet for the fridge control panel, vent the back, and a magnetic cover over the power connector. All be covered with sheet metal and powder coated gray. Water plumbing will be 1/4" bendable copper. A bit more work, but much more compact the PEX.

The thin wall metal structure is extremely light and very very inexpensive. Much more in both ways the 8020. And takes much less expensive real estate. All you need is a welder and a grinder...

Front area of the galley will have 4 drawers with soft close slides. Used it in our 80 and they are light and work perfectly.
