Because of the cold weather I'm almost only doing 'theoretical dry runs' , like reading parts catalogs and workshop manuals on the 70 work to come:
Need to swap the parking brake cable and wonder how to undo that claw bracket that holds the cable on the lever side.
Also wondering what would be a fitting replacement for the NLA front blinker lenses 81511-90K01 on my narrow nose BJ73. Probably 81511-60452 ?
At least I got the side blinker lens installed, and it was a fit. 2 screws in 2 weeks 😆
Keep warm, be cool 😎 and chill. Cheers Ralf

Hello,

These lenses are getting hard to find. They show up every once in a while, as available, only to disappear shortly after.

Make sure you get the gasket for the lens, part number 81512-90K01, as well. This item is just as elusive as the lens.

Another option is the 1999 - 2006 assembly. It does not look out of place with the older model grill.

Hello,

This is a good solution using materials available at hand.

May I suggest that you post this in the Random Redneckness thread as well? No offense intended. Many Redneck solutions are quite creative, considering they involve available materials.

I have not seen a reference for factory radiator screens for 70 Series trucks built after 1990. Perhaps Toyota decided to drop that feature back then. Or perhaps I have to check again.

I hear the polar vortex is getting worse. Take care, stay safe.

Hey!!

How did you even know my neck is RED?? 🤯

Thanks for the info, I did not even realize there was a thread called that. Lol

I was able to get fuel run to the Webasto and the electrical system jury rugged enough to get it to run last night. Should be good enough for the next couple of days while I wait for the rest of the materials I need to do a proper install. I did not have time to test it out last night since there were a couple of dead vehicles to shuffle around and it was very cold (-28ºF, -33ºC).

Was going to give it a try this morning but upon looking at the thermometer I figured I would just stay inside. It doesn't matter what the units are on that, its COLD!

Looking forward to seeing this working but yeah, maybe wait to finish it? We'll send you down another blast across the border to test it with I'm sure, but man alive. Enough already. This is getting (c)old...

I installed mine under the bonnet and while we don't get as cold as Bozeman, we still get in the negative here frequently. It's such a clutch upgrade. Well done!

Jury duty, not back in the garage till 25th…
oh brother, got an hour spare...

...tried the clear tubing from the new filter/prime pump/hoses/clamps to injector pump, no bubbles...

...primed, bled at injectors, cranked...

...50-60x times for 15 seconds until the battery went dead. no joy. checked prime again and took 3 pumps to hard and one small bubble...

...what am I missing?

You seem to be still getting a small amount of air, it seems. But with that small amount of air should not be enough to cause it not to at least stumble and start with some smoke. Where exactly is your clear hose? You could also try it on the return and check for air post-pump. Eventually I ended up replacing every rubber and hard line on my entire fuel system with new clamps to finally get rid of air(including the pickup from the tank.) Now even at -26C it starts Immediately.

I apologize if you have already checked the pre-heat ( glow) system. Test each glow plug for resistance, then for voltages across the bus bar when you turn the key on. Sorry, I do not have those values in front of me but they can be found in the FSM. You can also try 2 to 3 glows before cranking. Make sure your batteries are full.

You only need fuel, air and in Temps like these, some heat. Are you running any fuel additive? And if you have summer diesel still in the system, it will start to gel below -7C. The best additive I found so far is FPPF's Arctic Power. It adds lubricity in today's low Sulphur diesel, as well as anti-gel and cetane booster.

Best of luck on troubleshooting this, and stay warm!

…thanks @Rigster for those insights.

… only had time to try clear hose between priming pump and injection pump. I’ve just slithered under and can see hoses/lines are crusty. I guess I may also be replacing them all…

…haven’t checked the glows but I was starting/driving this vehicle just a couple of weeks ago. Another step in the wonderful journey with my snowflake princess unicorn Landcruiser…

Rebuilding the swivel hubs, new bearings, and converting to manual hubs on a 97' Hzj73. Unfortunately my brakes and dust shield are a lot more complicated than any of the videos I can find. I have everything freed up from this dust shield except the soft brake line. It attaches to a bracket on the back of the dust shield then goes into a hard line to the caliper. I detached the hard line to the caliper and removed caliper already. Also unclipped what I think was abs sensor. I broke the fitting to the soft brake line free to the back of the caliper, but as I loosen it, just wants to tie the soft line into knots. I'm sure there is a simple way, this is just all new to me. Suggestions?

Can't you just leave the soft line attached to the caliper and use some wire to hang it out of the way?

That is how all the videos I watched do it. Mine didn't have a soft line to caliper. Instead, has a soft line to a bracket attached to the back of dust shield, then a hard line to caliper. I already detached hard line to caliper and pulled caliper itself. Now, I just need to get soft line off bracket on back of dust shield so I can pull dust shield and keep going with the project.

No problem, happy to help a fellow Land cruiser enthusiast.

It started and ran fine a couple of weeks ago, but what were the Temps?

Cold weather has a tendency to bring out all the gremlins from our tractors...

Ah, OK. For some reason I thought you were dealing with the deep freeze alot of us are as well as fuel issues.

My apologies. I would stick with the fuel troubleshooting and remove all air and go from there

Is that a 90 degree elbow attached to the soft hose? Can you not get hard line off of it and spin the elbow round and round?
If not, get the other end of the soft line loose. Get that end’s hard line off then pull out the flat-ish spring plate that holds the end of the soft line in its bracket.

Hello
Although not that cold like in some places in NA, the weather forecast said temperatures to drop and snow to come in.
So I motivated myself and got the brakes checked and the parking brake cable replaced. The truck is due for road safety check soon,. The brakes where last done 4 years ago, so I opened them and thoroughly checked and adjusted them. Still good!
I also removed the bell cranks, cleaned out a lot of grime, put new boots.
20240104_201632.jpg

New parking brake cable also got installed.
20240114_132314.jpg

The boot around the cable was already busted when I got the truck 4 years ago.

Hold up for 4 years, but eventually so much grime got in, it seized. Should have fixed the boot earlier and would probably have gotten some more lifespan out of it. Well, now I have an all new cable and the parking brake is reliable again. Big safety factor when offroading in the hills. (And mandatory to pass inspection).
Cheers Ralf
