I’ll try my Sig 229 Tac Ops in there tomorrow. I don’t think it’ll fit at all but I’ll see what I can do. I have the short box as well.

I was looking for a list or something for what all handguns will fit in Joey's lock box, but searches didn't turn up what I was looking for. I have the standard small (short) one in my 80 and I know that S&W J-frames, mini-22's and .380's will all fit mine without disassembly, but I'd like to get a larger pistol because I am typically more accurate with those. So, what is the max size handgun that will fit? In my lock box the largest pistol I could fit was a Beretta 84/85 but it only fit with the mag removed. What all else for handguns will fit in there without breaking the gun down? I don't mind pulling the mag but field stripping a pistol just to fit it in there seems like a lot of extra work.
The reason I'm asking is that I'm looking to get a designated 'truck gun' to keep in there, and before anyone gets into it- yes I have a CCW and vehicle carry is legal where I live, so there are no legal issues to worry about here. The main use for this particular gun would be dispatching animals on the roadside that are critically injured from vehicle strikes, but it would be nice if the gun could do some defensive work too if that ever became necessary. It would probably have to be a 'beater' pistol with a messed up finish and a low price just in case the truck burned up or crashed with it inside. My favorite handgun is an FN Hi Power but it just does not fit in the box, and besides that I'd really hate to lose it to an accident or something.
Has anyone tried putting a CZ-83 or PA-63 in there? S&W 6904 or 2-1/2 inch 66? Or a Star BM? Do any of those fit?
Sorry calling BS on 10" barrel and accuracy to 800yrds. Unless your idea of accuracy is hitting a wall. 300blk out was invented to give troops a hard hitting short distance <100yrd round. The idea that the 5.56 being a small sectional area and quite fast that it would go right through the enemy. Troops wanted a heavier bullet that wouldn't penetrate and would deposit more energy.
**Edited**
At 800 yds the drop on a 300blk out that is 185g with a BC of 0.560 and 1000ft/sec is
yrds - 800
drop in inches -1172.1
drop in MOA -139.9
Velocity - 797.9ft/sec
Energy - 268.5ft/lbs
You have almost 100 feet of drop at 800yrds. And I don't know of any scopes that can even be dialed into 140MOA of drop. Even 34mm scopes usually max out at about 70MOA so even if you use a canted base you're still not close.
When did this turn into a gun forum? Asking which gun is best is like women asking which shoes to get.
First and foremost what you gonna do with that said animal. Second do you have an ARB or Ironman bumper? If you ain’t gonna eat it then I say back up a few dozen feet and give it a go. Second hit usually do the trick. 80 plus ARB should always do the trick unless it’s an elephant.
If you ARE gonna eat it then carry a sharp pocket knife to let out blood so it would taste better. Bleed to death is better for eating and quite humane.
And of course if you simply want a gun then I don’t think anyone here can help you better than you can help your wife choose the perfect shoes.
I would recommend checking the interior dimensions of the box adding whatever interior liner material you feel will be adequate and then checking that against the dimensions of whatever handgun you prefer. I'm personally a fan of the Sig Sauer P320 as you can buy various "caliber change kits" which can be swapped out onto what ATF considers the "gun" in this particular model which is essentially the trigger group.
The two purposes you have described (in my opinion) warrant 2 different handguns for the following reasons:
- most defensive situations will not allow time to unlock the box and retrieve the weapon. best to keep your defensive firearm where it's more accessible.
- In most states, firing from a public roadway is illegal, period. Given the noise difference of a 22LR vs. any capable defensive handgun caliber, the discretion offered by a 22LR could keep you in better standing with Johnny Law. While most officers I know would not break balls over this, Murphy's Law dictates that if this situation were to occur then you would find yourself dealing with the one overzealous turd in the state who would.
LOL Ryan! Are we talking about mortars here? I'm not going to say that someone can't hit a target at 800 yards with a 10" 300 blackout, but I will say that doing it on the first shot (unless you're sitting there with a rangefinder, wind meter and a TON of long range experience) is going to be damn near impossible. That post reminds me of someone who mentioned a 458 SOCOM being "a great round for elk". I'm sure it is if you have elk sneaking down your hallway!
I have to disagree here. You ever try to get close enough to a wounded animal to use a blade? Try that s*** on a whitetail or mulie buck and you'll end up looking like swiss cheese. Also, I would never consider a knife a humane way to dispatch anything, nor would I consider it advantageous to bleed out an animal to improve the taste... Also, in case the animal isn't already full of adrenaline, bleeding to death will certainly ensure that it is.
And did you really talk about "humanely dispatching" an animal and "just hit it again" in the same post?
Out of curiosity, where, and what military uses 300 blk?Whatever you say. I have trained men in conflict zones using that round since it first came out.
Learn to shoot....it would help you.
There was a YouTube video of Travis Haley, a former recon marine, and blackwater bubba, who was shooting a full length ar in 300 black and was doing 700 yds with a red dot and was lobbing them in. Once he found the spot on the hill to aim and after his spotter guided him in he hit it. This was after magazines were shot to hit it. It's not a long range round by any means. Your optic will run out of adjustment causing problems with parallax, the bullet will start to wobble as the bc changes. Not saying it CAN'T be done, you can create a beaten zone and eventually hit it. It's just not a long range round. What optics are you using?
Probably shouldn't post this but I'm gonna. My LCP loaded with Lehigh Defense extreme penetrators will probably do in just about any north american mammal assuming I can just walk up to it and pick my shot at a range of only a few feet. Problem is I can't shoot it decently at any kind of yardage. Not the fault of the gun, just my aging eyes and a very short sight radius. Bifocals require a longer sight radius, at least for me, and so for me that means a larger pistol.
I wonder if a Keltec P30 would fit in the box if it was taken down?
My old 30-30 is dangerous out to a mile and half. Says so right on the ammo box.

Yep sorry! Hijack over. Blasst PM if you want to take me up on the challenge. 10" target, 10" barrel AR at 800 yards with subsonic ammo, that is a bullet drop of 100ft/140MOA or more, it is ridiculous. I looked at several off the shelf subsonic ammos and they are all around 1050ft/sec out of a 16" barrel you might get 900-950ft/sec out of a 10" barrel making those numbers even worse. JBM has the trajectory listed as -1372.8" and almost 3 seconds of flight time with Hornady's load. Haha.
The comparable 140MOA drop with a 50BMG is about 2900 yards. The comparable shot with a 22LR using Velocitor ammo 40g is 700 yards...
Well, this thread sure went sideways. A whole lot of windage going on.

Too bad it won't accommodate one of these:
