I think the 8274 is the best winch that warn ever bought. It will run all day long and is way under rated, there is no internal break so running synthetic rope is not a problem. they are dead simple and look sweet on a fj40

Better is what application it's best for. I've seen m12's pull hard on 80 series cruisers. Not sure i'd put an 8274 on one. Likewise I probably would put an m12 on my 40 either.. JMHO

I have 2 8274's, one on the 40 and one on the 70.

If you want an 8274 for your Cruiser...then upgrade it with this: www.gigglepin4X4.net/8274/twinmotor.htm

I'm seriously thinking about this when its time to put a winch on the Cruiser (got other projects right now).

The "stock" 8274 I have now...resides on an Early Model Bronco, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

pretty cool, but $1500 w/o the extras? wow....
Cool that people are making these mods though!

I've seen a 12K in good shape stall on a double line pull on the 80 stuck DEEP in mud. A 55 w/ 8274-50 was pulled forward to pretty much the same spot as the tree the 80 was pulling from. Hooked single line to the 80 and pulled it right out.

sold me on the 8274 as being under-rated. the owner of the 80 w/ 12K was not surprised.....

the 8274 may well be overdesigned from what I read here and be able to pull harder than spec'ed.

IIRC it does come with 5/16" wire, though. That would hardly be enough for a true 12,000 lbs pull I would think. So, if the 82 really does pull way more than 8000, you'd better not use it with the original rope.

I suppose the 5/16 could be explained by the want to put in 150', but it is hard to believe that Warn would advertise it only as 8000 if it could readily do much more...
