Sweet, the dealership in Roseville has the Transmission for about 2K instead of $3200. So.. with the shifter and tax still under the before tax price of the local dealership. I might take the quote into the local dealer though because I do like to try to buy within the area if I can... but not at a cost of $1100.

Going to go out now and start grinding the rivets out of my wheels. Also, I have been informed that we'll be allowed to bring into school our own projects... I might widen this at school instead of doing them here. This isnt' something I want to mess up and the fab teacher is a badass at fabrication and just started school yesterday, and I was wearing my FJ40 tanktop and the teacher walked into the room and just stared at me and said it was the coolest shirt ever and he had to have one. Pretty excited my fab/advanced welding teacher has a cruiser, I think I'll be OK this semester. :)

Going to be trading the doors, and springs off one of my rusted out 55s this weekend for an 86 2f/4 speed/tcase... and will order the transmission Thursday.

This is going to come together a lot faster then I thought it was! I'm pretty excited to get a 2F/5 speed in there. It's going to be very

Holy crap, that was a lot more effort then I expected. Only took me an hour to get this apart!

However, now that I've done it, I have it figured out. The next 4 should go a lot faster. Even once I had the rivets out, I ended up having to cut the ring and bash it apart to get the center out. I guess when something has been stuck together since the 60's it wants to stay that way.

Grr... the guy I was trying to make a deal with for the engine is a total flake, sick of trying to get him to email me back. Not sure why you post something on craigslist... and then make it a nightmare to actually buy from you.

So... still searching for an engine...

But, going to order the 5 speed and my fabrication teacher happens to have the transfer case and bellhousing I need. Said free if I sell him the V8 when I take it out. So that works out well.

Well, scored a nice lockable console for my cruiser today, and the last wheel I needed for my 55.

But... still searching for an engine to use. THought I had found one locally, but it turned out to be out of an FJ40 and not late enough for a 2FE. I am getting close to the point where I might just buy it anyway and put it in with the 5 speed and when I find the right one build it and then swap them down the road. Don't really WANT to do it that way, but I'm just not able to find a 2F out of a 60 anywhere semi locally.

Seriously? NM is semi lousy with them. The wreckers here just crushed one with a 'running' '86 2F. I'll keep you posted if they get another in. Wanna come out to Santa Fe for an engine if it's cheap enough? He usually sells them for around the $200 mark.

A few months ago when I was hunting for an F engine for my 55, all I could find was FJ60 2Fs.. everywhere. Now I've found two and one guy was a total flake and I just gave up, and the other turned out to be too old.

I wouldn't be totally against a road trip if I could get a killer deal, but I'm not sure I have the time... school and starting a new job this week, I have no idea if I'll be able to get a few days in a row off any time soon... but, keep me posted. If something comes up for a good deal I'll sure try to figure it out.

I have also thought about picking up a whole FJ60... a few have popped up on CL for cheap enough I could buy it and part it out and make back most of it and keep the engine and Tcase.

Just want to start moving forward on this!!!!

Ha, after posting this I actually managed to find one. It's a little drive, but it sounds perfect. Rusted out FJ60, only 101K so should be a pretty strong engine I'm hoping. Good enough price, and I'm happy to have a lower mileage engine to start with so I'm cool with paying slightly more.

I was going to go camping with the wife's family this weekend, but it's so damn nasty out with all this smoke neither of us really wanted to go camping in it. So... going to go take a trip to Nevada this weekend instead and get a motor for my cruiser!

Yay! Found a good motor today. Had to drive to Carson City to get it, but my brother in law came with me because he wanted to go to Cabalas and get some stuff so came along. Totally worth the extra drive... it's super clean. Only 101K on it so I think having a nicer motor is worth the extra drive over there.

I got pretty sad when talking to him about the motor though... asked why he parted the cruiser... he said he was a VW guy and got the cruiser in a trade, in the pictures it looked perfect... so he parted it out because he didn't know anything about Toyotas and didn't want it and figured he'd make more parting it out then selling it. Ahhhhh... so had. 87 FJ60. Oh well, I got a nice motor for my 2FE build.

Going to talk to my welding teacher tomorrow and see if Wednesday he'll bring the Tcase, and hopefully I get the big fat check this week from my former employer and can go order the H55. Things are moving again. :)

Also... drove her up into the woods Saturday to visit the in laws camping up near us. They were like 20 minutes from our house so we just hung out for the day, but it was nice to take the cruiser into the woods anyway.

Sweet! Handy to get the Tranny/transfer out of that 87 for ease of install of your h55: longer bolts to bolt to the h55, longer linkages for the transfer shifter and 38mm idler shaft.

He wanted WAY too much for them. I did ask. Plus.. my welding teacher has them he's giving me for free... I like free.

Oh.. question... how well does using the Toyota PS pump with a Saginaw box work out? Underpowered or does it work OK? Somewhere I have a Chevy pump set up for an F engine, just have to find it... I do kinda want to use it because I wont have to get new lines made, but the Toyota pump is there and already attached and might be easier to just have new lines made.

Didn't get much done today. Helped my brother fix the head gasket on his truck for most of the day, but I did manage to get a little started on the motor.

Pulled off the EGR and the air rail, starting yanking all the smog stuff. Trying to decide if I am going to toss it in as a 2F with the 5 speed and then do the 2FE down the road, or tear this thing down and build it now and continue to collect parts for the next few months.

I also painted the valve cover, I like it. :) Going to take some black paint and a paint brush and paint the Toyota 2F black to make it sand out a little better.

Also, teacher gave me this yesterday. Split case for FREEEEE!!!! Plus, he wants the V8 when I take it out so I've already got it sold. I am really hoping to sell the parts I take out to help pay for the extra expensive parts I'm putting in.

Oopps. Wrong pic quoted  Just imagine this is the pic of the tranny and t-case :D

Also, teacher gave me this yesterday. Split case for FREEEEE!!!!

Couple of things about the case. This is from an earlier tranny and split-case combo because the spacer between the tranny and t-case is lacking. If you look at some photos of later H42s and H55Fs you see the spacer between the transmission and t-case and with the H55Fs 5th gear resides in this spacer.

This does not mean that you cannot use the case you've acquired. When you separate it from the transmission check for the indentation where the oiler cup will be plugged in. Again from lack of spacer you'll not be able to use the t-case shift linkage and you'll need to source longer bolts for mounting the t-case to the transmission.

Lot's of good info in the 60 series forum on H55Fs.

Crap, did a ton of research on the 2FE and the 5 speed but didn't really look at the case info much. This one won't work. Bummer. Asked him today and it's from a 80 so not going to have the oiler. :( Bummer... maybe I'll call up the guy I got the motor from and see if I can talk him down on the trans/transfer case. He wanted a retarded amount for them, but maybe I can work something out. It would be nice knowing the case only has 100K too.

Bunch of stuff fell off today.

Don't worry... none of this is going in the trash.. just sitting next to it!

Just stripping it down to get it onto the engine stand. Little worried about how heavy it is... it wobbled pretty bad with a 350 on it... this is a lot heavier. Trying to lighten it up just to be safe. It's rated like 1250... but still... would hate to have something bad happen.

Also starting to figure out how to mount everything and get it all planned. I think I can drop the PS pump down to the bottom where the smog pump was, and put the York were the PS pump was. Also... does the Toyota PS pump work OK with a Saginaw box? If it does.. I'll keep it. If not, I had a chevy pump that was mounted where the smog pump was hiding somewhere.... just have to dig it out.

Still not sure if I will start building the 2FE right away, or run it carbed for a few months while I collect 3FE parts. I've been reading... seems like most people who desmog have the carb and distributor adjusted for it... is this needed to run right or just to maximize the desmog effects? If needed... that will settle it as I'm not going to spend time/money on the carb and dizzy when they're getting replaced soon.

Also... what's up with brown on the valve springs?

Way happy with what I found once I got the head off. Man, it's clean. The cross hatch is still there, no lip at all. It looks almost new in there. :) Very happy I took the extra effort to go to Nevada to pick this one up instead of get the beat POS I found locally.
