unsolved over heating (Impossible to solve)

If you remove the head to check the gasket, get the head magnifluxed to make sure it's not cracked.

what nikos8 said, a crack in the head (pre or post machine work) would get the water boiling in a jiffy. I know that no amount of radiator, coolant mixture or thermostat can compensate for the amount of heat and pressure a crack can let into the antifreeze. Remember this truck can go up a mountain full throttle, loaded and with the A/C full blast and the temp gauge be less than half way up. So it's not like everything's gotta be picture perfect for the running temps to be in the normal range. The HC test can show the antifreeze loaded with combustion byproducts.

yes i have good flow i did what mattmiccins said. It was one of the first things i did to make sure the water pump was pumping. Thes send ing unit has been replaces and the gauge has been tested against another . I dont have the numbers. The mechanic is the one that did the IR gun readings. And yes iit is overheating, if i let it i will puke water/coolant out the resivour and steam. Head gasket has been replaced and head machineded. No oil in coolant before or after the head work. hydrocarbon test came out good.

So you know you have good flow without a thermostat, not the pump then.
If you run it without the thermostat all conected up does it over heat?

head gasket is installed right. I have run with and without the thermo and still same results. IR reading on thermo housing is 220 right before the gauge needle hits the red line.

I got it back last night. My mechanic thought he had fixed it but locking the fan clutch so its on all the time. It made it about 45miles before the temp started rising again. Now it gets hot after about 10miles of driving. Also now it feels like driving a cender block into a hurricane. Also a loud clicking coming form manifold now. I had the manifold gaskets replaced about 4 months ago due to leaks.

Monday i am going to get the Cat and muffler checked to see if they could be clogged. they are the only things that have not been check besides crakes in the block

If this problem ever gets solved, i will have to sale the 60. This is my 3rd cruiser in alittle under 5 years(60,80,60). Im a college student and can no longer afford these kinds of setbacks finacially, time wise and stress wise. Ill have to put offraoding and Land cuirser off for a long long time until i have the time, money and effort to play with them again.:frown: I can only hope that i get to that one point someday.

Have you replaced any gaskets on your cooling system with non-OEM gaskets?

We had an over heating issue and it was caused by us, replacing a gasket which we thought was a spacer with something else.

EDIT: look at post #30

the biggest thing that dosent make since is the fact that i have had the cruiser for a year now and have NEVER EVER had any heating problems before the water pump blow out and i lost all my water/coolant on the highway.

I'm running a similar situation, after running for a few minutes, the gauge moves almost to the "H". I have replaced the thermostat (didn't have any installed), flushed the system many times, filled the fan clutch wit grease, replaced the sending unit, tried another gauge, burped. Still running hot 240, according the after market gauge. All I got left is a compression check. Right now the truck is not being used until I resolve this issue. Any way to know if the head has a blockage? :hhmm:

Had you done any work to the engine just prior to the first overheat?
How hot did the engine get when the water pump went out on the freeway?
If you pegged the temp gauge, you may have cracked the head or block.
If you had just done a tune up, you may have two wires crossed.
Plugged exhaust is a good place to look next.
Look into the overflow bottle when engine is hot, do you see any bubbles from the pick-up tube?
Anything blocking airflow? New winch, custom full body skid plates?
Make sure your A/C compressor is not stuck in the on position making the condenser hot in front of the radiator.

Just some ideas I didn't see. Good Luck. :hhmm:

I finally recalled what the part was.

It was the fuel pump insulator. #4 in this diagram

I would check to see if its still there because that little bugger caused us a lot of trouble

What would happen if the heat riser was stuck shut?

There are gaskets and there are gaskets

I have seen your problem before and it was the head gasket and it nearly ruined my friends freshly rebuilt motor. The aftermarket head gaskets HAVE THE HOLES IN THE WRONG PLACES!!!!!! I have seen it more than once. Get a TOYOTA head gasket.

My 60 has been doing the same thing for a year (not a DD). I know your frustration. Overheating is such a pain. I hope you figure it out and let everyone learn from your problems.

I've replaced fan clutch, Tstat, water pump, hoses, head gasket, checked rad., etc. My mechanic pulled the head, found a blown gasket (a couple months old), and the head is something akin to "porous". If you trust your mechanic you might try to second guess the machine shop.

good luck.

Anyone know what ever became of this overheating issue?

Yeah - I hate it when these threads peter-out and the starter doesn't post a resolution, if any.

The original poster got back to me in a PM and said he never really figured out the problem.
I am going through the EXACT same problem. Not overheating, but running too warm. (220) 80% of the time.

ALL components changed with brand new ones...and I mean EVERYTHING.

Going to take it tomorrow to do a head gasket and pressure check. If that all checks out, I'll hopefully be taking her to Mark A to see what else it could be because there really isn't anything left except maybe the timing(which I'm pretty sure is dead on) and maybe the Carb running too lean.

Oh, I have a mechanical gauge and I have used a I.R. Temp gauge it it's running too warm like I said.
Burped too...I'm telling you..I've done EVERYTHING except those things I will be taking into a Radiator shop for and to have Mark A check the carb.

ay ay ay!:bang::bang::bang:

Have you tested your thermostat in a pot of water to make sure it opens fully?

Have you done a good flush? maybe try an acid flush?

Does it run hot if you just start it up and it is idling without driving it?
