@RustyBox That fix still working? I thought my intermittent click no-start was fixed when I replaced the ignition switch but it's come back so...looking for new ideas.
Yes, it has been flawless since then, driven hundreds of miles and dozens of starts without an issue.

You can easily test if it is something on the signal side by jumping from your battery + to the signal input on the starter, just make sure the truck isn't in gear!! If it cranks, then you've narrowed it down to either the ignition switch itself or something in the wiring for the signal like my issue.

I'll have to wait til it does it again, maybe I'll start keeping a length of wire and some clips in the glove box so I can test it wherever it happens. It's still pretty rare, hasn't done it again since my last post.

@RustyBox I’ve been trying to track down my own intermittent starting issue for a few years now and I’ve narrowed it down to the wire from ignition to starter. I was wondering if you could give me any more details about how you replaced or bypassed the signal wire. I was about to tear into my wiring harness to follow it from starter to ignition, but would rather not do that if there’s another option. Any info you’ve got would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I think I'm having the same issue..1981 FJ60

About every other time I try to start the car, I get this single click and no other sound. Often if I try a few times, sometimes over 5-10min, it eventually turns over and starts.

If I connect a portable battery charger to the battery it seems to start right up every time.

I've replaced the starter somewhat recently, don't think that's the problem (but maybe).

Possibly the battery terminal clamps need to be replaced?

Anyone have thoughts on the click?

Have thought

Had the same thing for a while. Replaced all my battery cables made by @Fourrunner and never happened again.

I had the same problem with both my 62 & my 60 which is my daily driver. I did this fix maybe 10 years ago & it has NEVER repeated itself.

Go to the auto parts store & buy a $15 5 pin relay.
A) unplug the wire from the starter solenoid. The one that gives it 12v when you turn the key.
B) run that wire to the relay you bought.
C) then run a wire from the relay straight to the battery. Fuse this wire.
D) then run a wire from the relay back down to starter solenoid that you unplugged.
E) run a wire from the relay to a good ground.

You are done. Mount the relay, I mounted mine to the firewall. I will post this, then try to find a picture of how/where I mounted the relay. Like I say it’s been 10 years…I believe my above directions are correct. My problem never once has resurfaced. This gives you a STRONG 12v going straight from the battery to the starter.

Ok, found the picture, this is on my 62 but it’s exactly the same on my 60.
