Are you expecting a Kodiak bear to come charging out of the woods???

Sure sounds that way, huh!:)

That is my deer rifle. While the bullet is large it is slow, which = less destruction of edible meat while still leaving a large primary wound channel = the deer doesn't run very far and still leaves a very obvious blood trail. I've probably taken about a dozen deer with that gun and the longest run was maybe 60 yards and that is stretching it. The blood trail is huge - you are not following droplets of blood but rather a literal trail. The last few I've just walked in the direction the deer ran and I walked right into it - literally once at dusk.

My previous deer rifles, which I still have, were your standard 30-06, 308, and 270 variety. Using higher end rounds forced an expansive secondary wound channel which ruined the shoulder meat no matter if I tucked the round just behind the shoulders or not. I like to go for a combo heat/lung shot. I could have gone for neck shots but necks move too much. I tried lower end, more traditional loads and there was less of a secondary wound channel but the deer would run up to a couple to few hundred yards which = a much longer drag back through the woods. I'm lazy, I need a short retrieval. The land I hunt on is only about 60 acres, so a long run could string me onto a neighbor's property which means I have to contact them first before I trail a deer on their property.

Now my new deer gun I haven't been able to try out yet is an Armalite AR10 in 308. :bounce::bounce2::bounce::bounce2:

Red dot would use those flat watch type batteries.

If you were a better shot you wouldn't need such a large bullet....

I would suggest a meeting to shoot if ammo was not made out of gold right now!

The start of dinner. The buffalo gun 45-70 takes credit for these loins.

Is it legal to hunt with .223 in SC? .270 is the smallest you can use up here for big game...
