Thanks for all the info fellas. My paint guy isn't pressuring me one way or the other on the type of paint, just his recommendation was the two stage, he'll spray whatever I ask him to. I hadn't thought about the fading of red paint, it is kept inside, so am thinking that would be minimal in my case.

What i'd really like to do, is do all the body prep work myself, and find a local "hobby/enthusiast" with some paint knowledge/experience that could do it, instead of going to a "professional" that has tons of overhead to cover. Anyone know of anyone in the Hampton Roads, Virginia area? Thanks again.

Single stage paint here.

Some professionals with a booth do not charge all that much to just spray your rig if you do all the prep and masking. Letting a guy with "some" painting experience could work if you can see some of his paint jobs beforehand. If you have a compressor why not buy a HVLP spray gun and make your own booth using clear polyethlene sheet.and spray it when the weather breaks. That is how I did my FJ40 and if you clean and reclean the area before painting you can get results almost as good as professional booth. Spray painting is not rocket science. Just mix the paint as directed and do a little practice on some scrap metal and you are set to go. The most difficult part for me is lighting. I spray with a reflector light in one hand and the gun in the other so I can see exactly how the paint is going on. Maybe you have good eyes but I am a geezer and need all the help I can get. Good luck Ed

I've often thought of making a temporary "booth" in my garage like you said Ed, but after much thought, I think I'd rather drop it off and let someone else have the "fun". I've got a buddy, unfortunately he's deployed for the next year, lives out in the country with a 4 bay detached garage, one of which he uses to paint in, but I can't wait for him to get home. Was planning on doing this the next month or two so I can put it back together and just leave the top off until the fall. Gives me a few months to rebuild the top.

I'm with "allfoden" on the light in the hand trick, did that even back when I could see. The light right on the job allows for perfect viewing. Also, wet the garage floor before you paint, that will keep the dust down. HPLV has very little overspray. Read some on what to do to the gun( more/less pressure, more paint) when the paint lays a certain way. These small rigs are perfect for the beginner. Almost all the parts can be painted seperately. Start with stuff you you don't see much like under the hood. Always use a mask or you will end up like this .

I used OMNI Base/Clear, its made by PPG but much less cost. ITs been a year and the paint still looks perfect. It has a perfect freeborn Red match. If I remember right I had about $500 into all the materials. If you have a shop buy it for you its probably cheaper. I also do not take it off road, so I like it shiney which it sure does shine. Heres a little before and after FJ40 Porn.

Makomark, do you have the paint code?

I think the Toyota code for Freeborn Red is 307 as my ‘78 is that color.

Thank guys, but I was asking Makomark the PPG color he used that closely matched the Freeborn.
