Brace yourself for this one...

I am still looking into purchasing a cruiser and wish I had closed the deal on a previous offer. I now know of a 96 that has low miles with a trd supercharger. I want to use the vehicle as a daily driver but do not want to deal with the overhead of maintaining a supercharger. I want the cruiser for the long haul and do not want the engine to work harder nor do I want to sacrifice gas mileage. I test drove one without the supercharger and felt the horse power to be more than adequate. Most of the units are out of state so the decision has to be the right one.

How asinine would it be to remove an installed trd supercharger? Is removing the unit difficult? Is this installation reversable or does it pose a detriment to the engine? I understand owners shell out good $$ for this addon.

Thank you...

Could you buy it with the blower then just take off the blower and sell it? Probably too much work but if you found a 94' in good cond. could be something to think about.

I just put a SC on my 96 with 110k on the clock and other then replacing the waterpump,Tstat and fan clutch (cause I was in there and had to take mostly everything thats in the way to do them out plus they were factory units ) I dropped down to a colder plug and bumped up to premium fuel thats about all I plan to do other then what did before with PM stuff.
I say keep it on :D

If you pull the supercharger, let me know.

I would be interested in buying it off ya.

If your driving style doesn't require the added horsepower then you can actually get better mileage with it on than without it. Also if you aren't pushing the motor there is no reason it shouldn't last just as long with or without the SC. There is no benefit in removing it other than recovering some of the money spent buying the rig, but why not just find one without the SC?

I would think you are going to pay more for any 80 series with a SC, so if its not something you want, pass on this one and find one without. There are still plenty of nice ones out there. You could spend the same amount you would on this one and find one in better shape, lower miles and/or other add-ons more suited to you.

The only "overhead" involved in running a blower is an additional drive belt, an idler pulley, a tensioner and premium fuel.

Of course the condition of the cooling system becomes more critical but it could be argued that the cooling system should be "right" regardless.

I can tell you that a blower that is already there would be a helluva lot cheaper than buying a new one............:D

Let me add that if you want to "reverse" the supercharger, unless the PO gives you all the old parts, you'll have to repurchase all those old parts, then go thru the process of uninstalling it. Junk has done this (or is doing this?), so he could tell you precisely what's involved.

Why is junk uninstalling? I am concerned about the premium fuel. I have a 97 Aurora that consumes it like a drunken sailor and don't need another. One of the many attractions of going from a 93 Pathfinder to a Cruiser involved the issue that I could continue to fuel it with regular octane.

Then a supercharged 80 is not for you. End of story. I put 100,000 miles on one in 3 years with an average of 12 miles per gallon and average premium gas cost of $1.50/gal. Do the math on that one.

Jim

Maybe an 80 series is not for you, the extra couple of bucks for premium, per tank, pales in comparison to the fuel consumption/cost with just "regular" gas.

If fuel consumption is that large on your radar screen DO NOT get a Land Cruiser.

I have a 93 Pathfinder as well that is no slouch when it comes to fuel consumption. I am going to replace the pathfinder for a Landcruiser but I may very well have to continue exercising patience and wait for one without the supercharger. My Pathfinder only cranks out 159 hp so the 212 from the Landcruiser felt good to me.

Thank you for the constructive feedback.

It's all about torque, baby. Torque. And the motion of the ocean -

If you knew Junk's driving style, you'd understand why he would take it off. He pushes his equipment hard and when the engine is pushed hard, other things will wear as well. Up the horsepower and torque, and the ring and pinions, driveline, U joints, and birfields will be fine. Up the horsepower and torque and whip it like a rented mule, and those parts will often grenade or come apart. Junk is a whip it like a rented mule kind of driver. Removing the S/C will still leave him a lot of power, but give him an additional buffer to push the rig before it comes apart.

I wish I could blow my cruise :D
You complain at 159 in a pathfinder, try 155hp in the 3FE with the weight of a cruiser..thats what you get if you got a 91-92 like me.

But if you want a car thats regular fuel then fawk the one with the blower.

.

Try a "90hp of fury" 3B pushing a Landcruiser all dolled up with roof rack/sliders/rear bumper with swingouts and a ARB up front loaded with a M10000. The Cruiser :princess: 92 is a rocket ship and the 96 with the S/C is light speed :D
Hell my 40hp stock beetle will blow the BJ70s doors off, :crybaby: but theres the coolness factor with the 70 :flipoff2:

It took a long time for me to get use to the lackluster hp of the pathfinder. My Aurora is fast so if fills the void.

I don't think I will ever graduate from junks driving school of hard nocks. It shure sounds fun nonetheless...

Come on by my place, you can pay to fill up the tank and we'll go for a ride. You'll grin when your ears are pinned back, howl when you see how much high dollar fuel you just consumed. Like others have said, if you're concerned about fuel economy, don't buy an 80 and certainly don't buy a supercharged 80.

Two other things, first that I don't buy into the improved fuel efficiency with a SC if you keep your foot out of it theory. And I've tested it. As to Jim getting 12 mpg with this rig, maybe before every accessory known to man was bolted on to it....

This is how my supercharger makes me feel: :D :crybaby: :D :crybaby: :D :crybaby: :D :crybaby: :D :D :D :D :D
